But can such stress actually expand your face?\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm29d45pe000j3b6mk53hfqfp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWhile chronic stress can lead to increased levels of cortisol in the body, those levels don\u2019t usually rise high enough to create a moon face,\u201d said dermatologist Dr. Rajani Katta, a clinical assistant professor at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm29d45pe000k3b6mlz555dkg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cFluid retention can be due to many causes, from your diet to medical conditions such as kidney disease.\u00a0Some prescription medications can also lead to fluid retention,\u201d Katta said in an email.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm29d45pe000l3b6mfwsjstiw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            True \u201cmoon face\u201d is a byproduct of having <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/conditions-and-diseases\/overactive-adrenal-glands--cushings-syndrome\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cushing\u2019s syndrome<\/a>, a condition in which the body has extremely high levels of cortisol, Katta said, typically from the protracted use of prescription medications such as the steroid prednisone or, more rarely, cases in which a person\u2019s adrenal glands are overactive.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm29d45pe000m3b6muezlfii4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In addition to a rounded face, Cushing\u2019s syndrome can cause increased fat around the neck or a fatty hump between the shoulders and upper body obesity, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/conditions-and-diseases\/overactive-adrenal-glands--cushings-syndrome\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Johns Hopkins Medicine website.<strong\/><\/a>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm29d45pe000n3b6mrwi3t9ep@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cFor medical causes of fluid retention, treating the underlying cause will help. Your physician may also prescribe a diuretic to help your body rid itself of extra fluid,\u201d Katta said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm29d45pf000o3b6m0h3vyz4s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While cortisol levels from elevated everyday stress may not be the reason behind so-called moon face, the hormone can take a toll on the skin in other ways.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm29d45pf000p3b6mxayx5zdq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Stress hormones such as cortisol can trigger breakouts and dull skin, accelerate aging, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/05\/16\/health\/skin-cancer-screening-wellness\/index.html\">exasperate skin conditions <\/a>such as eczema and psoriasis, according to dermatologist Dr. Whitney Bowe, an assistant clinical professor of dermatology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm29d45pf000q3b6m9ajczrj1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cConsistently elevated cortisol levels have been shown to inhibit your skin\u2019s production of collagen, hyaluronic acid and healthy lipids like <a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/ceramides\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ceramide<\/a>,\u201d\u00a0Bowe told CNN in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/06\/05\/health\/skin-stress-tips-wellness\/index.html\">an earlier interview<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm29d45pf000r3b6mldj0m0ay@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cCollagen is like the scaffolding of the skin that prevents fine lines and wrinkles,\u201d Bowe said. \u201cHyaluronic acid keeps the skin plump, and ceramides are healthy fats that create a barrier to prevent skin permeability, thus locking moisture into the skin.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm29d45pf000s3b6mou8489et@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            People often turn to salty snacks when stressed, which might explain swollen eyes and face, as well as swollen legs and feet, experts say.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm29d45pf000t3b6mxkufywle@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIf your face is puffy, one of the first questions I would ask would be about your sodium intake. A high intake of sodium can lead to fluid retention throughout the body,\u201d said Katta, author of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Glow-Dermatologists-Guide-Whole-Younger\/dp\/1937978095\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Glow<\/a>: The Dermatologist\u2019s Guide to a Whole Foods Younger Skin Diet.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm29d45pf000u3b6m72rhh558@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIf it\u2019s just a matter of too much sodium last weekend, then going back to your normal diet should help within a few days,\u201d she added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm29d45pf000v3b6mokrx2qw3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Another culprit \u2014 eating too much sugar and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/04\/17\/health\/rise-type-2-diabetes-global-wellness\/index.html\">ultraprocessed carbohydrates<\/a>, which \u201cunfortunately can damage the skin\u2019s collagen over time through a process called glycation,\u201d Katta said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm29d45pf000w3b6mj4hvc61s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Glycation occurs when sugar molecules attach onto fats and proteins and create advanced glycation end products, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9029922\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AGEs<\/a>, which can make collagen and elastin proteins less supple \u2014 and the skin more likely to wrinkle, she said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm29d45pf000x3b6mj57rsask@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cFoods rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties can help provide an extra layer of protection to your skin and can help promote your skin\u2019s defense and repair systems,\u201d Katta suggested.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm29d45pf000y3b6mygggqhu8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            There are ways to reduce stress that can benefit the skin as well, experts say. Exercise increases blood circulation to the face and helps with the release of endorphins, the body\u2019s feel-good hormones.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm29d45pf000z3b6ml378fylu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Exercise also pushes oxygenated blood to all your body parts, including the skin, which can boost the skin barrier\u2019s recovery process, experts say. In addition, yoga, meditation and deep breathing are all known to decrease cortisol production and stress levels.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm29d45pf00103b6mn9v25uuv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Good-quality sleep is another way to improve skin and reduce stress, according to sleep specialist Dr. Raj Dasgupta, an associate professor of clinical and sleep medicine and pulmonary critical care at Huntington Health in California.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm29d45pf00113b6mon57e7lb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt\u2019s called beauty sleep because sleep does regenerate your skin at night,\u201d Dasgupta told CNN <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/06\/05\/health\/skin-stress-tips-wellness\/index.html\">earlier<\/a>. \u201cThere\u2019s a hormone called growth hormone that gets secreted during the deeper stages of sleep that stimulates fresh skin cell growth.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm29d45pf00123b6mv6j5514n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Adults older than 18 need at least seven hours of solid sleep at night to be healthy,\u00a0according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/sleep\/about\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a>.
