If it passes the initial vote, it would be scrutinized in committees and subject to further votes, including in the House of Lords, the upper chamber of Parliament.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It would be the first time in nearly a decade that British lawmakers vote on assisted dying, a once-taboo practice that has seen increased interest and legalization among Western countries in recent years. Here\u2019s what to know:<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-e4ab4f1\">What is the current law in Britain?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It is <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cps.gov.uk\/publication\/assisted-suicide\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">illegal<\/a> to assist someone in the act of killing themselves in Britain. The proposed legislation only covers England and Wales, but a similar bill is being considered by Scotland\u2019s Parliament.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Still, it is difficult to convict someone in these kinds of cases. According to the Crown Prosecution Service, the public prosecutor for England and Wales, 187 cases of assisted suicide have been referred to courts in the last 15 years; only four have been successfully prosecuted.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It is not legal to assist someone\u2019s suicide in Scotland, but prosecutors there have said it is <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dignityindyingscotland.org.uk\/assisted-dying\/the-law\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">exceedingly unlikely<\/a> that anyone would face charges for doing so, assuming the act was fully voluntary.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-32032d0c\">What is allowed in other countries?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Assisted dying <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/2023\/dec\/19\/assisted-dying-around-world-where-when-allowed-esther-rantzen\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">has been legalized<\/a> in many parts of Europe and North America in the 21st century. Many <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10507858\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">European countries<\/a>, including Belgium, the Netherlands and Spain, permit assisted dying under certain circumstances.
