rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/weather\/2024\/10\/nj-weather-snowy-winter-ahead-see-accuweathers-forecast-for-2024-2025-season.html\">AccuWeather predicted a mild, low-snow winter<\/a> for the New Jersey region, government forecasters from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issued similar predictions on winter temperatures, but mixed predictions on our state\u2019s snow potential.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"VM5VPUG6BRBTLKP445FHF7XCYM\">In its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.noaa.gov\/news-release\/us-winter-outlook-warmer-and-drier-south-wetter-north\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.noaa.gov\/news-release\/us-winter-outlook-warmer-and-drier-south-wetter-north\">winter outlook for the 2024-2025 season<\/a> released Thursday morning, NOAA said a slowly developing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/weather\/2021\/10\/la-nina-has-returned-will-this-bring-more-snow-to-nj-this-winter.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/weather\/2021\/10\/la-nina-has-returned-will-this-bring-more-snow-to-nj-this-winter.html\">La Ni\u00f1a weather pattern<\/a> will likely play a role in how the upcoming season shapes up. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"C42SO2PGLBC6LIVSGOH7RJGFUQ\">The agency\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Climate Prediction Center<\/a> is predicting warmer than average temperatures in the Garden State \u2014 along with New York and most of Pennsylvania \u2014 but offered no firm predictions on how wet or snowy the upcoming winter season will be in these areas of the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4ZFCNMWDJVDG3MWVO4OLJN56IM\">The winter outlook says there are \u201cequal chances of below-average, near-average or above-average seasonal total precipitation\u201d for the New Jersey region. article__paragraph--left\" id=\"N6NIE2TC7FGI3GAXZQELITBEPQ\">La Ni\u00f1a is a natural climate pattern that develops when sea surface temperatures near the equator in the eastern Pacific stay cooler than average for extended periods. This type of pattern can change the track and strength of snowstorms in any part of the United States by influencing the jet stream.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LMF7UMLXRZDQDLKGTDFSETHSXM\">During the past 30 years, many winters in which La Ni\u00f1a conditions were thriving resulted in milder temperatures and average or below-average snowfall in the eastern U.S. However, during some La Ni\u00f1a winters, New Jersey got hit with heavy snow.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6GA3K24XUBH6LIRQCEDZLJNLEQ\">So, La Ni\u00f1a conditions don\u2018t always have the same outcome. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"HQIOZ2ZJ2RCXDITDNB67V6QKRA\">In addition, the La Ni\u00f1a pattern that\u2019s predicted for this winter is favored to be on the weaker side, so its impacts might not be as definitive as they usually are, said Jon Gottschalck, chief of the Operational Prediction Branch of NOAA\u2019s Climate Prediction Center.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"PVGPX2LIVZGOZAP5IMKMPJI3RA\">The NOAA winter outlook covers the three <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncei.noaa.gov\/news\/meteorological-versus-astronomical-seasons\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">meteorological winter<\/a> months of December, January and February and does not include specific snowfall projections.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"AJJXAYFBYZD43CV7AUXZMS5QB4\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/weather\/2022\/03\/nj-weather-heres-how-much-snow-fell-this-winter-and-why-this-was-a-very-rare-season.html\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/weather\/2022\/03\/nj-weather-heres-how-much-snow-fell-this-winter-and-why-this-was-a-very-rare-season.html\" rel=\"noopener\">New Jersey typically averages<\/a> about 34 inches of snow a year in the northern part of the state, approximately 28 inches in Central Jersey and about 18 inches in South Jersey.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"article__image\">\n<div class=\"article-heading\">NOAA precipitation outlook<\/h2>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"FIIHP7NT5BE3ZPZ2OOQ66XATS4\">Here\u2019s a look at what NOAA is predicting this winter for different regions of the nation:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"article__unordered-list\">\n<li><span>Wetter-than-average conditions are most likely in the Great Lakes states, and above-average precipitation is also favored in northern and western Alaska, the Pacific Northwest and across the northern tier of the U.S. These probabilities are strongest in portions of Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>The greatest likelihood for drier-than-average conditions are in states bordering the Gulf of Mexico, as well as in Texas and southern New Mexico.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Much of California, the central Plains states and the I-95 corridor from Boston to Washington, D.C., have equal chances of below-average, near-average or above-average seasonal total precipitation.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"article-heading\">AccuWeather winter forecast<\/h2>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"NHOFUPNCNVHODIHNAWV43KBUSA\">Last week, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accuweather.com\/en\/winter-weather\/winter-forecast-for-the-us-in-the-2024-25-season\/1699821\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/www.accuweather.com\/en\/winter-weather\/winter-forecast-for-the-us-in-the-2024-25-season\/1699821\" rel=\"noopener\">AccuWeather\u2019s forecast for the winter season of 2024-2025<\/a> was released, predicting warmer than average temperatures and less snow than normal for the Garden State, as well as in many major cities and metro regions in the eastern U.S., including New York, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Boston.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"BKN7DDZXNZCDBLFN7JNZI3QV3E\">Forecasters from AccuWeather said warm water temperatures in the Gulf of Mexico and northern Pacific, a weak La Ni\u00f1a weather pattern, and a tight polar vortex are three major factors contributing to this winter\u2019s weather
