data-v-438398f6=\"\"><strong>TAMPA, Fla. &#8211;<\/strong> Cases of flesh-eating bacteria have seen an unusual spike following impacts from Hurricanes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/helene\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Helene<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/milton\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Milton<\/a>, data from the Florida Department of Health shows.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.floridahealth.gov\/diseases-and-conditions\/vibrio-infections\/vibrio-vulnificus\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According to the health department<\/a>, 70 cases have so far been reported in 2024, with 11 deaths \u2013 figures that are similar to 2022 when Hurricane Ian damaged Collier and Lee counties.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The health department attributed a rise in cases in Citrus, Hernando, Hillsborough, Lee, Pasco, Pinellas and Sarasota counties to the impacts of the recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/hurricanes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hurricanes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Vibrio vulnificus normally lives in warm seawater but can pose increased risks when pushed inland by tropical cyclones.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Despite the apparent increase in coastal communities, infections are still considered to be extremely rare.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">health<\/a> department, infections can occur by consuming contaminated shellfish or through open wounds that are exposed to water.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/weather-news\/red-tide-tracker-florida-gulf-coast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>SATELLITE DATA SHOWS RISING THREAT OF RED TIDE FOR FLORIDA GULF COAST<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">To reduce the risk of infection, health officials advise against consuming raw oysters or shellfish and avoiding the exposure of open wounds to standing water.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">&#8220;Healthy individuals typically develop a mild disease; however\u00a0Vibrio vulnificus infections can be a serious concern for people who have weakened immune systems, particularly those with chronic liver disease,&#8221; the Florida DOH stated. &#8220;The bacterium can invade the bloodstream, causing a severe and life-threatening illness with symptoms like fever, chills, decreased blood pressure (septic shock) and blistering skin lesions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2 data-v-4e81e892=\"\">Red tide risk also increasing<\/h2>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">In addition to Vibrio vulnificus, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/weather-news\/red-tide-tracker-florida-gulf-coast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">scientists are also monitoring for an uptick in Karenia brevis<\/a> \u2013 the algae that produces red tide \u2013 along the Gulf Coast.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Following Hurricane Milton\u2019s landfall near <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/local-weather\/florida\/sarasota\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sarasota<\/a>, satellites detected significant levels of chlorophyll, which can sometimes be a precursor to the production of red tide events.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapoisoncontrol.org\/florida-red-tide-american-lung-association-provides-tips-on-protecting-yourself-from-respiratory-issues\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Lung Association warns<\/a> that those exposed to the toxins can experience respiratory symptoms, which include coughing, sneezing, runny nose, wheezing or shortness of breath.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Unlike Vibrio vulnificus infections, exposures to Karenia brevis are not known to result in human deaths but can be detrimental to marine life.<\/p>\n<div class=\"featured
