Vance<\/a>, who was in the coma, it was Lois all along,\u201d Nash-Betts explains to <em>The Hollywood Reporter<\/em>. \u201cSo that plot twist and all the things you were introduced to believe about all the other characters, that really wasn\u2019t their truth either. So now that Lois is awake, who are these people? And, what the hell is happening?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tNeglecting to answer her own question for fear of unleashing any spoilers, Nash-Betts says of the remaining three episodes of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/fx\/\">FX<\/a> horror, \u201cI can tell you, more twists to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe already surprising plot twist confirms <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/raven-goodwin\/\">Raven Goodwin<\/a>\u2019s prior claim about her character, telling <em>THR <\/em>in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-features\/grotesquerie-raven-goodwin-merritt-1236030243\/\">previous interview<\/a>, \u201cMerritt is way more than what meets the eye.\u201d In episode seven\u2019s \u201cUnplugged,\u201d she\u2019s revealed to be a cancer researcher with two doctorate degrees \u2014 rather than a gluttonous homebody \u2014 who\u2019s married to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-news\/travis-kelce-grotesquerie-character-1236019468\/\">Travis Kelce\u2019s Ed Lachlan<\/a>, who is no longer a charming orderly, but a philanderer who\u2019s been sleeping with his mother-in-law, Lois, when he\u2019s not working at Cinnabon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/lesley-manville\/\">Lesley Manville\u2019s<\/a> Nurse Redd and Marshall remain in a romantic relationship, though she\u2019s now Cherry Redd, an OnlyFans model of sorts and Marshall still a professor and apparent cheater who, hypocritically, is so disgusted by Lois\u2019 affair with Ed that he decides to pull the plug on her. It\u2019s then that Sister Megan\u2019s (Micaela Diamond) interest in cult crimes takes on a new form as she\u2019s shown to be the true chief detective of the police department who then shows up at the hospital to pay her respects to Lois. It\u2019s there that Father Charlie (Nicholas Alexander Chavez) is revealed to be a critical care physician, rather than a man of the cloth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tBelow, Nash-Betts, who\u2019s also also an executive producer of the series, talks about keeping the plot a secret from the rest of the cast, potential love scenes with Kelce and filming that vicious kitchen fight with Diamond.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t***<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-news\/grotesquerie-huge-twist-episode-7-ryan-murphy-1236033876\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-news\/grotesquerie-huge-twist-episode-7-ryan-murphy-1236033876\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ryan Murphy told <em>THR<\/em> <\/a>he didn\u2019t tell you much about this series before he sent you the scripts, other than he wanted you for this role. What was your initial reaction and what made you say yes?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tWell, listen, he had a couple of things going, as you know. He\u2019s always up to something. So first we sat down at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/chateau-marmont\/\">Chateau Marmont<\/a>, and he pitched all of these things and I\u2019m like, \u201cOh, that sounds interesting,\u201d and then he sent me some scripts. Once I saw the script for <em>Grotesquerie<\/em> I was like \u201cding ding ding.\u201d I love this so much, I\u2019ve never played anything like it. I was seduced by a character that I\u2019d never played before. And I just had to do it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>Lois is such a complicated character. Where do you pull from to embody all that she is?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tHoney, all I gotta do is turn around, look right behind me at this family that I was born into, and [say], \u201cI\u2019m gonna take a little bit of that from that auntie,\u201d \u201cI\u2019m gonna take that from that uncle,\u201d \u201cI\u2019m gonna take that from that person.\u201d I borrow the things that I\u2019ve experienced in life to create her.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>In unfolding this Russian doll twist on twist, how do you play a character like that while knowing everything? And, do you know everything about how the story ends?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tI know a lot. I know a lot, because you have to unravel the thread of where the story is going so you know how to be along the way, how to perform, how to show up. Ryan is a great collaborative partner because we walk it down and talk it down almost on the daily to make sure we\u2019re getting it right. [When] you unpack the mind of Ryan Murphy \u2014 I don\u2019t even know how he comes up with this stuff, but I trust him so much that he always has me at \u201chello.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>Was it hard keeping the details a secret from the rest of the cast?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tNo, because each scene, we are so locked in. And it\u2019s fun to be on a set where the cast and the crew are having conversations about whodunit. We start off as a horror, then we move into a family drama, and then it becomes this big whodunit. There are so many different things that we\u2019re playing through this series. We\u2019ve got enough to keep us busy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>Speaking of, the fight scene between your character and Micaela\u2019s is brutal. Can you talk through that execution and how much time you spent getting it right?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tWe spent a lot of time on it. You look at a fight on television and it\u2019s just like looking at a dance, there\u2019s choreography that has to happen. They don\u2019t just put you in a room and say, \u201call right, scratch each other\u2019s eyes out.\u201d It\u2019s \u201cwhen she puts her hand here you put your hand there,\u201d \u201cwhen she does this you do that,\u201d so there\u2019s a lot of moving parts and our stunt doubles came in. My favorite, I\u2019ve been working with for many years, her name is JJ Branch, and they walked through exactly what their part is going to be and what Micaela and I are responsible for. (Diamond now plays the new police chief, who stepped into Lois\u2019 job amid her coma.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<cite class=\"a-font-accent-uppercase-xs lrv-u-color-grey-dark\">Prashant Gupta\/FX<\/cite><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>The partnership between Lois and Sister Megan has been enjoyable to watch up to this point. What was it like working with Micaela so closely?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tOh, that\u2019s my baby. I love her so much. She\u2019s so talented. She comes from the theater, so this was her introduction into television, and I just thought she did a fantastic job. I also love that we got to marry a little bit of her industry in the story when we do the drive-along and we get to sing together in the car <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-features\/grotesquerie-episode-7-tease-max-winkler-1236030658\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-features\/grotesquerie-episode-7-tease-max-winkler-1236030658\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">[in episode four].<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>Ryan also said you have incredible chemistry with Travis Kelce. Initially it seemed the relationship with Lois and Ed might just be in her head, but later we learn they\u2019ve been intimate. Are there any romantic scenes between the two of you coming up?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tWell, first of all, I love Travis. He\u2019s a great guy, great to work with. I thought that he did such a good job for this to be his acting debut. I love the fact that all of these characters get to play a duality. So we get to see him as fast Eddie in the beginning and then the plot twist \u2014 oh, he really has a mullet and works at the mall. So, are you gonna get to see exactly what happened between Lois and Eddie? Stay tuned.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-features\/grotesquerie-raven-goodwin-merritt-1236030243\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-features\/grotesquerie-raven-goodwin-merritt-1236030243\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Raven Goodwin told <em>THR<\/em> <\/a>that you called after she sent in her audition tape and asked her if this was something she really wanted to do. What made you reach out to her and ultimately choose her for Merritt?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tShe was my first choice from the beginning. I sent her materials to Ryan, and I was like, \u201cWe need to see this woman.\u201d I even went so far as to put a picture of me and a picture of Courtney B. Vance and her little face in the middle. I\u2019m like, \u201cDon\u2019t we look like a family? She look just like her daddy. Come on now.\u201d (<em>Laughs<\/em>) I was rooting for her. I really wanted to work with her because I think she\u2019s so talented. And when she came in to audition, I was like, \u201cI\u2019m coming. I want to read with her. I need you to see it in the room. It\u2019s going to be great.\u201d And it was, and she is. I was so happy that it all worked out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>What did it mean to you to be an executive producer on this series and have a hand in shaping it as you did?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIt means, \u201cListen up and lean in. I got something to say.\u201d (<em>Laughs<\/em>) It just means that I was able to fully participate in all the areas of this production. And I love it there. I love it there because you are creating, and you are molding and influencing the world and the people around you. It\u2019s one of my favorite things to do to be a leading lady and an EP.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>An Emmy nomination seems pretty imminent for this role. How do you feel about that prospect<\/strong>?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tWhen you show up to do the work you\u2019re not thinking in the moment, \u201cboy this is gonna get \u2018em. This will be the one.\u201d You have to be present and locked in and dialed in in order to get a grounded performance. When I did my big speech in episode three, when I completed it, all of the cast that was sitting around were like (<em>claps<\/em>) and that didn\u2019t make me say, \u201cOh, here\u2019s another Emmy coming.\u201d But what it made me say is, \u201cI did something that was believable,\u201d \u201cI did something that people saw and they had a visceral response to the performance.\u201d And then the next thought is, \u201cOkay, what\u2019s the next thing?\u201d because you can\u2019t live in that. \u201cOh, they started clapping for me?\u201d No. We\u2019ve got a long day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>This series touches on a lot of important themes in the midst of this existential crisis, from abortion to climate change and AI. Do you think the timing of the series is important on the verge of the presidential election?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tDo I? Of course I do. I\u2019m not the only Black woman trying to save the world from evil.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t***<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<em>Grotesquerie<\/em>\u00a0releases episodes eight and nine next Wednesday at 10 p.m. on FX (streaming next day on Hulu), followed by its finale on Oct. 30.
