abusing the company\u2019s $25 meal stipend, spending the money on nonfood items or having meals delivered to their homes.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>According to posts on the tech-professional social media site Blind, the firings took place last week, with staff being discharged from their posts in the Los Angeles office.<\/p>\n<p>Separately, <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/06\/13\/mark-zuckerbergs-year-of-efficiency-spreads-to-metas-upper-ranks-vps-next-to-be-culled\/?itm_source=parsely-api\" target=\"_self\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/06\/13\/mark-zuckerbergs-year-of-efficiency-spreads-to-metas-upper-ranks-vps-next-to-be-culled\/?itm_source=parsely-api\" rel=\"noopener\">Meta<\/a> has begun restructuring teams more widely in its WhatsApp, <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/facebook\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/facebook\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Instagram<\/a>, and Reality Labs divisions.<\/p>\n<p>Writing on Blind, one Meta staffer outlined that employees are given a $25 <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/grubhub\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/grubhub\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Grubhub<\/a> credit if they work past 6 p.m. in offices that don\u2019t have cafeterias on site.<\/p>\n<p>A post seen by <em>Fortune<\/em> on the Blind platform alleges the disgraced staffers were ordering meals when they weren\u2019t even in the office; were giving their credits to other members of staff; or were using the credits to buy groceries and other household essentials.<\/p>\n<p>Between 20 and 30 staff members have reportedly been laid off.<\/p>\n<p>Meta is hardly shy of cash to splash\u2014but that doesn\u2019t mean <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/10\/03\/zuckerberg-bezos-worlds-second-richest-billionaire\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/10\/03\/zuckerberg-bezos-worlds-second-richest-billionaire\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Mark Zuckerberg<\/a> is allowing the <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/02\/02\/meta-stock-earnings-zuckerberg-year-of-efficiency-layoffs-dividend\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/02\/02\/meta-stock-earnings-zuckerberg-year-of-efficiency-layoffs-dividend\/\" rel=\"noopener\">company to get soft<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Meta is currently valued at nearly $1.5 trillion, having reported <a href=\"https:\/\/investor.fb.com\/investor-news\/press-release-details\/2024\/Meta-Reports-Second-Quarter-2024-Results\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/investor.fb.com\/investor-news\/press-release-details\/2024\/Meta-Reports-Second-Quarter-2024-Results\/default.aspx\" rel=\"noopener\">Q2 2024 earnings<\/a> of $39.07 billion in July\u2014an increase of 22% year over year.<\/p>\n<p>But the man at the helm, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/billionaires\/profiles\/mark-e-zuckerberg\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/billionaires\/profiles\/mark-e-zuckerberg\/\" rel=\"noopener\">worth $204 billion<\/a> himself, pushed for a \u201cyear of efficiency\u201d in 2023 and announced it would <span style=\"box-sizing:border-box;margin:0px;padding:0px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2023\/03\/mark-zuckerberg-meta-year-of-efficiency\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2023\/03\/mark-zuckerberg-meta-year-of-efficiency\/\" rel=\"noopener\">lay off 10,000 staffers<\/a>\u00a0and freeze<\/span> hiring for 5,000 more.<\/p>\n<p>And it seems Meta <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/05\/26\/mark-zuckerberg-wealth-grew-47-billion-scrappier-meta-facebook-layoffs\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/05\/26\/mark-zuckerberg-wealth-grew-47-billion-scrappier-meta-facebook-layoffs\/\" rel=\"noopener\">isn\u2019t afraid to let go<\/a> of even some of its most highly paid employees.<\/p>\n<p>A further post on Blind, reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/7d1a2738-2518-4ddb-811b-8abf9a745590\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/7d1a2738-2518-4ddb-811b-8abf9a745590\" rel=\"noopener\">the<\/a><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/7d1a2738-2518-4ddb-811b-8abf9a745590\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/7d1a2738-2518-4ddb-811b-8abf9a745590\" rel=\"noopener\"> Financial Times<\/a>,<\/em> was written by an employee who claims to have been paid $400,000 a year by the company.<\/p>\n<p>The individual said they worked \u201cnights and weekends\u201d for the Big Tech giant, and had spent their $25 credit on items like toothpaste and tea from pharmacy <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/rite-aid\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/rite-aid\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Rite Aid<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The person said if their partner was cooking or they were eating out with friends, the money would be spent on other items, as the employee felt they <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/02\/02\/meta-cto-andrew-bosworth-bemoans-philanthropy-workplace-perks\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/02\/02\/meta-cto-andrew-bosworth-bemoans-philanthropy-workplace-perks\/\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cought not to waste\u201d the perk<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the post, the employee claimed they had admitted their error to human resources but had later been fired, adding: \u201cIt was almost surreal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meta did not respond to <em>Fortune<\/em>\u2019s request for comment seeking confirmation or clarification on the issue.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">More Meta layoffs<\/h2>\n<p>The handful of people laid off over meal expenses won\u2019t be the only ones leaving Meta.<\/p>\n<p>Separately, Meta has confirmed restructuring in other teams. <\/p>\n<p>The tech giant told the<em> Financial Times<\/em>: \u201cToday, a few teams at Meta are making changes to ensure resources are aligned with their long-term strategic goals and location strategy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis includes moving some teams to different locations, and moving some employees to different roles.
