Of those, about 17,000 patients were between 18 and 44 and the other 302,000 were older.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Colorectal cancer rates have been steadily increasing among adults under 50 since the \u201990s. <span class=\"credit\">ryanking999 \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Colon cancer has long been associated with older adults, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2072-6694\/16\/10\/1820\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">especially people over 65<\/a>. But colorectal cancer rates have been steadily increasing among adults under 50 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/news-events\/cancer-currents-blog\/2020\/colorectal-cancer-rising-younger-adults\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">since the \u201990s<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know that over the last 20 years, rates of colon cancer diagnoses have decreased 20% for patients 66 years and older,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facs.org\/for-medical-professionals\/professional-growth-and-wellness\/clinical-scholars-in-residence\/current-clinical-scholars\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr. Kelley Chan<\/a>, lead study author and a fourth-year general surgery resident at Loyola University Medical Center in Chicago.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>\u201cBlack Panther\u201d star Chadwick Boseman was diagnosed with Stage 3 colon cancer in 2016 at the age of 39 before dying of the disease in 2020 at 43. He is photographed here in 2016 at the 47th NAACP Image Awards. <span class=\"credit\">FilmMagic<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cHowever, the rates of this cancer in those between 18 and 44 years old have increased 15% during that same period,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>Chan\u2019s team noted that among the younger adult cases they studied, there was a remarkable number of non-Hispanic black patients and a startling number of patients diagnosed in the later stages of the disease.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2020\/09\/01\/chadwick-bosemans-secret-fight-suns-me-colon-cancer-patient\/\">Chadwick Boseman<\/a> was both \u2014 the \u201cBlack Panther\u201d star was diagnosed with Stage 3 colon cancer in 2016 at the age of 39 before <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2020\/08\/29\/chadwick-boseman-wouldve-been-a-screen-legend\/\">dying of the disease<\/a> in 2020 at 43.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/medicine.yale.edu\/news-article\/with-colorectal-cancer-rates-rising-among-younger-adults-a-yale-cancer-center-expert-explains-there-may-be-more-factors-behind-this-worrisome-trend\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Oncologists have partly blamed<\/a> the concerning rise in youth cases and deaths on obesity, a sedentary lifestyle, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/06\/03\/lifestyle\/western-diet-may-raise-risk-of-early-onset-colorectal-cancer\/\">the Western diet<\/a>, excess sugar consumption, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityofhope.org\/whats-behind-rising-colorectal-cancer-rates-in-young-adults\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">environmental factors<\/a> such as pollutants in the air, soil and water, and other factors yet to be identified.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur findings highlight the need for more research to understand the development of colon cancer in adults under age 45,\u201d Chan said.<\/p>\n<p>Inspired by the troubling trend, the US Preventive Services Task Force changed its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uspreventiveservicestaskforce.org\/uspstf\/recommendation\/colorectal-cancer-screening\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">colorectal cancer screening guidelines<\/a> in 2021 to lower the recommended age to start screening from 50 to 45 for adults at average risk.<\/p>\n<div class=\"single__inline-module inline-module inline-module--newsletter aligncenter aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-newsletter\">\n<div class=\"inline-module__inner\">\n<div class=\"inline-module__title-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"inline-module__unsubmitted-title-wrapper\">\n<h3 class=\"inline-module__title headline headline--combo-sm-md\">\n\t\t\t\t\tGet the latest breakthroughs in medicine, diet &amp;
