(AP) \u2014 <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/kamala-harris\">Kamala Harris<\/a><\/span> and <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/donald-trump\">Donald Trump<\/a><\/span> will both be scouring for votes in Michigan on Friday as they try to lock down support in this key political battleground.<\/p>\n<p>Harris, the Democratic vice president, is scheduled to begin her day in Grand Rapids for a rally with other Democratic leaders. She then goes to Lansing, where she\u2019ll speak at a United Auto Workers union hall and promote the White House\u2019s record of supporting domestic car manufacturing. <\/p>\n<p>Her final event of the day is a rally in Oakland County, which is northwest of Detroit. <\/p>\n<p>Trump, the Republican former president, has his own event in Oakland County in the afternoon before holding a rally in Detroit in the evening.<\/p>\n<p>Michigan is one of <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/kamala-harris-michigan-wisconsin-pennsylvania-election-479ad508d075b27f141312e21b4fc081\">three \u201cblue wall\u201d states<\/a><\/span> that, along with Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, will help decide the election. <\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s event in Detroit will be his first one there since <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-detroit-2382e6f01ea6d236e8a2b755ff150580\">insulting the city last week.<\/a><\/span> While warning what will happen if Harris is elected, he said that \u201cour whole country will end up being like Detroit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The city spent years hemorrhaging residents and businesses, plunging into deep financial problems, before rebounding in recent years. <\/p>\n<p>One challenge for Harris in Michigan has been <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/harris-trump-union-michigan-uaw-4faf892e9b91ae7cd1a6ffecaceb8d7d\">union support.<\/a><\/span> Although traditionally a Democratic bloc, she\u2019s failed to win <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/harris-trump-labor-michigan-georgia-dockworkers-98eee32bc975ed5bc284d3e0785e5d7b\">some key endorsements.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>In addition, Arab American voters have been <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/harris-arab-muslim-michigan-election-trump-lebanon-israel-palestine-2eb34bd82c8665cae43c6a91196959c0\">skeptical of Harris<\/a><\/span> because of the White House\u2019s steadfast support for Israel\u2019s military operations in Gaza.<\/p>\n<p>Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, a co-chair of Harris\u2019 campaign, said in an interview Thursday that the expectation was always that \u201cit was going to be a close election.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople are like, \u2018Oh it\u2019s so close.\u2019 And I\u2019m like, have you not been listening for decades?\u201d Whitmer said. \u201cMichigan is a divided state. And that\u2019s why we don\u2019t write off the reddest of areas on a political map. We show up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kent County, where Harris will start her day Friday, leaned Republican for many years, and was won by Trump by 3% in 2016.
