And 13% are concerned enough that they&#8217;ve shared their suspicions with their doctors.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, just over 4% of adults aged 18 to 44 actually have a diagnosis of ADHD, according to Ohio State clinical assistant professor Justin Barterian.<\/p>\n<p>This disparity may be due to the prevalence \u2014 and popularity \u2014 of videos about ADHD on social media, university researchers <a href=\"https:\/\/wexnermedical.osu.edu\/mediaroom\/pressreleaselisting\/survey-finds-25-percent-of-adults-suspect-they-have-undiagnosed-adhd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">speculate<\/a>. On platforms like TikTok, videos like &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@meltsinfusions\/video\/7231221662807641350?is_from_webapp=1&amp;sender_device=pc&amp;web_id=7307053660654945834\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">5 signs you have ADHD<\/a>&#8221; and &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@clairebowmanofficial\/video\/7237878732021665030?is_from_webapp=1&amp;sender_device=pc&amp;web_id=7307053660654945834\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">How to spot an ADHDer in public<\/a>&#8221; have over 100,000 likes and even more views.<\/p>\n<p>Mental health professionals worry that self-diagnosing can lead to over pathologizing and potentially labeling &#8220;the spectrum of normal behavior as ADHD,&#8221; says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwo.ca\/bmi\/investigators\/adrian-owen.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Adrian Owen<\/a>, a professor of cognitive neuroscience and imaging at Western University in Canada.<\/p>\n<p>Psychologist and author of &#8220;The Happy High Achiever&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/maryandersonphd.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mary Anderson<\/a> agrees. &#8220;We all might have times where we have difficulty with focus or get distracted easily,&#8221; she says. &#8220;But just because we have that occasionally doesn&#8217;t mean that we meet criteria for ADHD.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"ArticleBody-styles-makeit-subtitle--JP3GH\"><a id=\"headline0\"\/>The potential harms of self-diagnosing ADHD<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>ADHD shares symptoms with a number of other conditions including anxiety, depression and some learning disabilities, according to Owen. &#8220;By self-diagnosing, a person may overlook these underlying issues leading to inappropriate, ineffective treatment,&#8221; he says.<\/p>\n<p>People who self-diagnose may &#8220;seek out treatments like stimulant medications, for example, without professional guidance, and that can result in misuse or overreliance,&#8221; he says.
