He\u2019s talking with <em>Variety <\/em>the morning after the debut of Episode 6 of \u201cAgatha All Along,\u201d which finally revealed the backstory of his character: William Kaplan, a.k.a. Billy Maximoff, a.k.a. one of the sons of the Scarlet Witch. For the first time since he landed the role nearly two years ago, Locke is able to speak freely about (almost) every aspect of the character.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI\u2019m so happy for Joe,\u201d says \u201cAgatha All Along\u201d creator and showrunner <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/jac-schaeffer\/\" id=\"auto-tag_jac-schaeffer\" data-tag=\"jac-schaeffer\">Jac Schaeffer<\/a>. \u201cHe has navigated the secrecy part of it so well, so elegantly, I am relieved that he can finally speak to the work that he\u2019s put into this character and the arc of the show.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIt hasn\u2019t been easy to keep these secrets. Practically from the moment news first broke that Locke, <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2024\/tv\/features\/joe-locke-heartstoper-season-3-sex-agatha-gay-role-1236119579\/\">star of Netflix\u2019s hit series \u201cHeartstopper,\u201d<\/a> would star opposite Kathryn Hahn\u2019s nefarious witch Agatha Harkness, Marvel fans have speculated that Locke was playing Billy Maximoff \u2014 who in the comics adopts the superhero handle Wiccan. But rather confirm those suspicions, Schaeffer put the identity of Locke\u2019s character, in the show\u2019s parlance, under a sigil, a spell that masked his identity not only from the other characters, but from the audience as well.\u00a0 That all changed at the end of Episode 5, when <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2024\/tv\/news\/agatha-all-along-teen-billy-kaplan-wiccan-joe-locke-1236174833\/\">the show revealed Teen was, in fact, Billy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cAfter the 10th time someone\u2019s like, \u2018You\u2019re playing Billy Maximoff,\u2019 and I\u2019m like, \u2018Whaaat? No!\u2019 \u2014 it gets easier,\u201d Locke says with a laugh. \u201cBut I saw loads of comments last week being like, \u2018Worst kept secret ever. We all knew!\u2019 It\u2019s like, yeah, but I couldn\u2019t fucking say anything, could I? I still had to keep the secret!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tEpisode 6, entitled \u201cFamiliar By Thy Side,\u201d reveals the full story of how Billy came to join Agatha and the rest of their ad hoc coven on the Witches\u2019 Road. The episode opens three years earlier, as a 13-year-old kid from Eastview, N.J. named William Kaplan (Locke) celebrates his bar mitzvah, on the same day that Wanda Maximoff collapsed her spell controlling the nearby town of Westview at the end of 2021\u2019s \u201cWandaVision.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAs William is driven home by his adoring parents Rebecca (Maria Dizzia) and Jeff (Paul Adelstein), an oncoming car forces them off the road, and they slam against a tree, right where William was sitting. As his parents scramble to get help, William\u2019s heart stops beating at the same moment that Wanda\u2019s collapsed spell erases her twin sons Billy and Tommy from existence. Suddenly, William\u2019s eyes burst open, as he screams out, \u201cTommy!\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tPut simply: After William dies, Billy\u2019s soul takes over his body. But when he awakes, Billy cannot remember anything before the accident other than Tommy\u2019s name. He knows only that he\u2019s different, magical, able to hear other people\u2019s thoughts. He just doesn\u2019t know why or how.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThree years later, we see Billy sharing his ongoing investigation into his origins with his boyfriend, Eddie (Miles Gutierrez-Riley). After Billy arranges to meet with former Westview resident Ralph Bohner (Evan Peters) \u2014\u00a0i.e. Wanda\u2019s fake brother from \u201cWandaVision\u201d \u2014 he learns for the first time about Wanda\u2019s twin sons and what happened to them, as well as a dangerous witch named Agatha Harkness. The showrunner, who also created and executive produced \u201cWandaVision,\u201d told <em>Variety <\/em>in September about <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2024\/tv\/news\/agatha-all-along-joe-locke-teen-theory-patti-lupone-1236149417\/\">how Agatha kept bubbling up<\/a> in all of her early development with <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/marvel-studios\/\" id=\"auto-tag_marvel-studios\" data-tag=\"marvel-studios\">Marvel Studios<\/a> for her next series, so she decided to center the show around the character completely. \u201cI was interested in people from Agatha\u2019s past,\u201d she says now. \u201cAgatha, in her best self, is a mentor, a teacher. I wanted her to have a student. So my early idea was this notion of this goth teen\u00a0\u2014 I could see the eyeliner, and imagine he\u2019s a fan of the movie \u2018The Craft.\u2019 It was executive producer Mary Livanos who was like, \u2018Billy. Billy. It\u2019s Billy.\u2019 So that really launched the idea.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"heading larva \/\/   lrv-a-font-primary-l   \">\n\t\t<strong>Why was it important to keep Billy\u2019s identity hidden from the characters and the audience for so long?<\/strong>\t<\/h4>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI\u2019m interested in mysteries because I think that they\u2019re fun,\u201d Schaeffer says. \u201cBut more than that, I\u2019m interested in strong justification for a mystery.\u201d While conceiving how to drive Agatha\u2019s story forward, Schaeffer and her writing team hit upon the fact that, in the Marvel comics, she also had a son, and that a mysterious teenage boy showing up on her doorstep could trigger that instinct inside her. \u201cThe connections between Agatha history and her son and Billy just felt so potent,\u201d Schaeffer says, \u201cas much for the character of Agatha as for the mystery potential for the audience.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"heading larva \/\/   lrv-a-font-primary-l   \">\n\t\t<strong>How did the writers decide how to depict Billy\u2019s consciousness inhabiting William\u2019s body?<\/strong>\t<\/h4>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSchaeffer says that when she learned about Billy\u2019s extremely convoluted origins in the comics \u2014 tied up in dense metaphysics involving pieces of the soul of the devilish villain Mephisto\u00a0\u2014 her first reaction was, \u201c<em>What? Tha included how the production went about casting the role.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI can\u2019t overstate how much we thought about it,\u201d Schaeffer says. \u201cCasting took a very long time. Ultimately, Joe was the right person for Billy Maximoff, and I\u2019m thrilled that he took the role.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAlthough Locke is one of the rare out LGBTQ actors to play a queer superhero, he isn\u2019t Jewish; Schaeffer\u2019s father\u2019s side of the family is Jewish, but she was not raised religious. They both say they are acutely aware of how the decision to cast him as Billy put even more pressure on the show to portray the character\u2019s Judaism faithfully.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThis is something I\u2019ve grappled with over the last few years,\u201d Locke says. \u201cI wanted to make sure that those scenes were tackled with the highest respect. I stressed a lot over making sure that we did that right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tLocke worked with Rabbi Alexandria Shuval-Weiner for four months on how to sing William\u2019s Haftorah and read from a portion of the Torah. \u201cIt\u2019s hard to do speaking and singing in Hebrew from a British accent to an American accent,\u201d he says. \u201cShe really helped make sure that we filmed those sequences with the greatest respect.\u201d (Shuval-Weiner even has a brief cameo as William\u2019s rabbi.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSchaeffer  also credits the show\u2019s Jewish writers\u00a0\u2014 including Jason Rostovsky, who wrote \u201cFamiliar By Thy Side\u201d \u2014 for identifying William\u2019s bar mitzvah as an ideal event for a show about women dedicated to maintaining an ancient tradition. \u201cThere were times when I was like, \u2018Am I shoehorning this into the story?\u2019\u201d she says. \u201cBut I was so moved by what the writers were telling me about the overlap between these women and their understanding of ritual and belief in the sacred, and this opportunity to create this beautiful sequence that is so much about heritage.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"heading larva \/\/   lrv-a-font-primary-l   \">\n\t\t<strong>How did the show try to make Locke look 13?\u00a0<\/strong>\t<\/h4>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tLocke was 19 when he shot \u201cAgatha All Along,\u201d but aging him down to 13 for his scenes as William amounted mostly to hair styles, eyeliner and camera angles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI had a day of just hair trials where we tried different hair,\u201d Locke says. \u201cAt the end, I was like\u201d \u2014\u00a0he musses up his hair \u2014 \u201cand they were like, \u2018Oh wait, that\u2019s good.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSchaeffer briefly considered casting a younger actor for these scenes, but decided that would undermine the dramatic weight of watching the character the audience had experienced for the previous five episodes deal with inhabiting William\u2019s body. \u201cSo we took off the eyeliner,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd Joe\u2019s quite tall, so I kept being like, \u2018Can we get a higher angle on Joe so that he feels less huge?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn the end, though, \u201cit was Joe\u2019s performance\u201d that sold it, Schaeffer says. \u201cWe were worried about it, but he\u2019s so deft at conveying an insecurity in yourself.\u201d Besides, she adds, \u201cThey do it all the time on \u2018Euphoria.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-content-image \/\/ of \u201cWandaVision\u201d \u2014 when the series broke from its rhythm of evoking a classic TV sitcom with each episode to explain what is really going on, which she calls \u201cthe rewind\u201d \u2014\u00a0as a \u201cbreakthrough\u201d moment for the show.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI found that so satisfying as a writer, and I wanted that same hit on this show,\u201d Schaeffer says. \u201cSo the idea of pairing the rewind with the explanation of Billy seemed economical \u2014 and fun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIt also afforded Schaeffer a chance to resolve a nagging problem she had with the first episode of \u201cAgatha All Along.\u201d At end of \u201cWandaVision,\u201d Wanda traps Agatha in her sitcom persona as the nosy neighbor, but the new show opens with Agatha trapped in a version of prestige crime dramas called \u201cAgnes of Westview.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cWe didn\u2019t show that transition,\u201d she says. \u201cI don\u2019t like to ask the audience to do more than one step in their minds to understand what\u2019s going on, but \u2018Agnes of Westview\u2019 required two steps.\u201d By going back to follow how Billy wound up in Agatha\u2019s life, Schaeffer could show audiences how Agatha lived her life believing she was in a TV show while everyone else in Westview no longer did.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tFor Locke, getting to recreate his interrogation scene with Hahn was an exercise in desperately trying not to laugh on camera. \u201cI can see myself laughing in that scene,\u201d he says. He\u2019s more proud, though, that he was able to hold his own when Hahn began improvising. \u201cWhen I first watched the scene, I was like, oh my God, they included my improv, I feel so honored!\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tLocke\u2019s proudest ad lib: When Billy says, \u201cC\u2019mon, I do not want to go back in the closet,\u201d as Agatha is stuffing him inside of her closet.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThat was me and Jac together,\u201d he says. \u201cJac was like, \u2018I wasn\u2019t sure if that was something that we could say. The witch spray was his idea. He just jumps all the way in.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"heading larva \/\/   lrv-a-font-primary-l   \">\n\t\t<strong>How much concern was there about differentiating the romantic scene between Billy and Eddie in Eddie\u2019s car from similar iconic scenes that Locke\u2019s performed with Kit Connor in \u201cHeartstopper\u201d?<\/strong>\t<\/h4>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cOh my gosh, I didn\u2019t think about it at all,\u201d Schaeffer says. \u201cI love \u2018Heartstopper.\u2019 It\u2019s wonderful. But it was our intention to come in on 16-year-old Billy Kaplan\u2019s story at a point where he is out and dating. \u2018Heartstopper\u2019 is a lot about discovery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tLocke, meanwhile, was too preoccupied with the scene itself \u2014 which was one of his audition pieces \u2014 to worry about any perceived similarities with his other show.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s weird, you\u2019d think that I\u2019d find that scene one of the easiest to film, but it was the hardest,\u201d he says. \u201cWe actually had to reshoot it. The big monologue-y bit in the middle \u2014 I just couldn\u2019t get it. I always find that the scenes that I audition with end up being the hardest, because I know them so well. You do them hundreds of times over the audition process \u2014 they become robotic. I lose the naturalism and the realness of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tLocke is having great fun, however, with the memes about how much Charlie, his character on \u201cHeartstopper\u201d hates Marvel, whereas Charlie\u2019s boyfriend Nick, a Marvel super-fan, has a mother, aunt, and boyfriend \u2014\u00a0played by Olivia Colman, Hayley Atwell and Locke \u2014 who are all in the MCU.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI find them funny,\u201d Locke says. \u201cWe all laughed about it on set, but the meta-ness of it never came up. I think even [\u201cHeartstopper\u201d creator] Alice [Oseman] drew Nick and Charlie as Hulkling and Wiccan years and years ago, way before the show was even a thing. We see in Episode 6 that he can\u2019t really control it. It only comes out when it\u2019s an intense moment. We see him being able to read other people\u2019s minds on the start of the episode, so he\u2019s aware of his power. But he doesn\u2019t know the extend of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"heading larva \/\/   lrv-a-font-primary-l   \">\n\t\t<strong>What about fan theory that Billy is orchestrating the Witches\u2019 Road in the same way his mother was responsible for the sitcom world of \u201cWandaVision\u201d?\u00a0<\/strong>\t<\/h4>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI saw that one, and I found it very interesting,\u201d Locke says with a smile. \u201cThere\u2019s some really good theories out there. There\u2019s some really wacky ones too, but they\u2019re also great. One of the best things about having a weekly release for such a secretive, complex show is the fan theories that come out of it. You see things like, \u2018Oh, I\u2019ve never even thought there would be a link to that. You\u2019re so wrong, but I see why you think that!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSchaeffer \u2014 who contended with a tsunami of fan theories for \u201cWandaVision\u201d\u00a0\u2014\u00a0also sidesteps addressing any particular suppositions. \u201cIt is my deep pleasure to not waste anything, from what\u2019s on the page to what\u2019s in the frame to who is cast, when everything is used with great meaning,\u201d she says. \u201cSo I\u2019m so grateful that this is a fandom that pores over every detail. Sometimes that is to the detriment of the watch, because you should let it wash over you \u2014\u00a0and sometimes it pays off. I would just say, keep watching.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBy way of responding to the notion that Billy is some kind of magical masterminded, Locke does point to the revelation in Episode 6 that his character encountered the other witches in the coven well before Billy met Agatha: Lilia (Patti LuPone) creates the sigil that hides his true identity from all witches; Alice (Ali Ahn) is the Eastview cop who first comes to his aid after the car accident; and Billy obsessively watches skin care regimen videos posted by Jennifer (Sasheer Zamata) on YouTube. I\u2019ve been <em>so<\/em> bored the last few weeks. I\u2019ve been very busy the last few years, and this has been the quietest\u00a0I\u2019ve been pretty much since I got \u2018Heartstopper.\u2019 And I hate it.
