Contract permits for single-family dwellings rose to a pace of 970,000, a 0.3% gain from August\u2019s revised figure of 967,000 units.<\/p>\n<p>October\u2019s data could reveal a different story, given that mortgage rates have <a data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/mortgage-rates-spike-for-third-straight-week-while-buyers-grow-cautious-160130274.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:ticked back up;cpos:4;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\">ticked back up<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile single-family home building increased in September, higher mortgage interest rates in October are likely to place a damper on growth in next month\u2019s data,\u201d NAHB\u2019s chief economist Robert Dietz wrote in a note after the release.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, housing starts eased in September, pressured by a drop in multifamily construction.
