{"id":115788,"date":"2024-10-19T02:49:48","date_gmt":"2024-10-18T19:49:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=115788"},"modified":"2024-10-19T02:49:48","modified_gmt":"2024-10-18T19:49:48","slug":"drug-overdose-deaths-fall-for-6-months-straight-as-officials-wonder-whats-working","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=115788","title":{"rendered":"Drug overdose deaths fall for 6 months straight as officials wonder what&#8217;s working"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"\">After years of rising, the tide may finally be turning on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/overdose-deaths-decreased-first-time-5-years-still-topped-100000-rcna152193\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">deadly drug overdoses<\/a> in America.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Drug overdose deaths fell 12.7% in the 12 months ending in May, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/nvss\/vsrr\/drug-overdose-data.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">preliminary data released Wednesday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThis is the largest recorded reduction in overdose deaths,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/ondcp\/briefing-room\/2024\/10\/16\/white-house-drug-policy-director-statement-on-latest-drug-overdose-death-data\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">White House officials said in a statement<\/a>. \u201cAnd the sixth consecutive month of reported decreases in predicted 12-month total numbers of drug overdose deaths.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">It\u2019s also the first time since early 2021 that the number of estimated drug overdose deaths for a 12-month period fell below 100,000, to 98,820. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">It\u2019s categorically good news. It\u2019s also a bit puzzling to the public health experts who have been working for years to stop the upward trajectory of opioid deaths, driven primarily by fentanyl.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">In Cleveland, for example, monthly overdose deaths in the first three months of this year fell by 40% compared to last year, according to the city\u2019s public health director, Dr. David Margolius.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">It\u2019s unclear what prompted the sudden, unexpected decline. Overdose reduction strategies like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/narcan-opioid-overdose-drug-otc-access-varies-us-stores-rcna135324\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">increased availability of Narcan<\/a>, a rescue medication that can reverse opioid overdoses, were in use long before the abrupt drop. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWe\u2019ve been doing the things we\u2019re doing for over 10 years. I\u2019d love to say it\u2019s finally working,\u201d said Dr. Joan Papp, an emergency physician at Cleveland\u2019s MetroHealth Medical Center. \u201cBut boy, I don\u2019t know. I wish I knew so I could bottle it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">One potential factor at play: People are no longer using drugs in isolation as they did during the height of the pandemic. Now, they\u2019re more likely to use around other people who could call 911 or give a dose of Narcan. <\/p>\n<section class=\"embed-widget embedWidget embed-widget--medium\" data-testid=\"embed-widget\"\/>\n<h2 class=\"\">A continuing trend?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\">Forty-one states saw decreases in drug overdose deaths in the 12 months ending May, according to the latest CDC data.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cFor the first time since at least 2018, national data for 2023 showed a decline in overdose deaths compared to the previous year,\u201d Chrissie Juliano, executive director of the Big Cities Health Coalition, a group that represents health officials from the nation\u2019s largest cities, said during a media briefing Thursday. \u201cProvisional 2024 national data continues this trend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Even the nation\u2019s largest metropolitan area \u2014 New York City \u2014 saw a small but measurable drop.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">In 2023, 3,046 people in the city died of a drug overdose, according to its health officials. Walker \/ Boston Globe via Getty Images file<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"\">Officials in Seattle echoed the national trend. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cFor the first time in several years, we\u2019re starting to see a significant decrease in overdose deaths,\u201d Brad Finegood, who oversees overdose and addiction programs in Seattle, said during Thursday\u2019s briefing. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The city logged 22% fewer overdose deaths in the first nine months of this year compared to last year.
