Well, you should be because <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/ridley-scott\/\" id=\"auto-tag_ridley-scott\" data-tag=\"ridley-scott\">Ridley Scott<\/a>\u2018s epic and potentially huge blockbuster sequel, \u201cGladiator II,\u201d has exploded onto the scene following its first screening in Los Angeles in front of an audience of AMPAS and SAG voters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe long-awaited sequel to best picture winner \u201cGladiator\u201d (2000) is igniting the spark for Scott, its three-time Oscar-nominated director, to be in the running to win his long-coveted Academy Award. Additionally, his stars Paul Mescal and <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/denzel-washington\/\" id=\"auto-tag_denzel-washington\" data-tag=\"denzel-washington\">Denzel Washington<\/a> are now contenders in their respective acting races.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAfter picking up his first best actor Oscar nomination for \u201cAftersun\u201d (2022), Mescal could find himself back in the category for his \u201cGladiator II\u201d leading role. Meanwhile, Washington, who already has two acting <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/oscars\/\" id=\"auto-tag_oscars\" data-tag=\"oscars\">Oscars<\/a>, could be in contention for a third, potentially joining a small list of three-time acting winners, including Frances McDormand, Jack Nicholson, and Daniel Day-Lewis. Times said the film has \u201cabsolute sicko shit,\u201d further calling it \u201cthe \u2018we are so back\u2019 of bloody costume epics.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"\/>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cGladiator II\u201d occurs 16 years after the first film\u2019s events. The story follows Lucius (Mescal) \u2014 the grandson of Rome\u2019s former emperor Marcus Aurelius and son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) and Maximus (Russell Crowe). Lucius now lives with his wife and child in Numidia. However, when Roman soldiers led by General Marcus Acacius (Pedro Pascal) invade, he is forced into slavery. He must fight as a gladiator at the behest of the current young emperors, Caracalla and Geta (Joseph Quinn and Fred Hechinger).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tScott\u2019s awards campaign is a major focus for Paramount Pictures, which is also pushing the Robbie Williams musical biopic \u201cBetter Man\u201d and the newly acquired 1972 Munich Olympics hostage tragedy \u201cSeptember 5\u201d this awards season. Of Scott\u2019s three previous directing Oscar bids \u2014 which also include \u201cThelma &amp; Louise\u201d (1991) and \u201cBlack Hawk Down\u201d (2001) \u2014 \u201cGladiator\u201d was his closest shot at victory, losing to the double-nominated Steven Soderbergh for \u201cTraffic\u201d (his other nomination was for \u201cErin Brockovich\u201d).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWhile Scott\u2019s critical reception has been inconsistent in recent years (i.e., \u201cRobin Hood\u201d and \u201cExodus: Gods and Kings\u201d), \u201cGladiator II\u201d might be his best effort since \u201cBlack Hawk Down.\u201d Even if the sequel primarily excels in technical categories, history has shown that visually stunning films, like Ang Lee\u2019s \u201cLife of Pi\u201d or Alfonso Cuar\u00f3n\u2019s \u201cGravity,\u201d can still propel directors to the Dolby Theatre stage. Of course, Denis Villeneuve\u2019s stunning \u201cDune: Part Two\u201d will be angling for those same categories. Is there room for both?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tInterestingly, Oscar history shows that a director whose film won best picture but lost the director category can still return to win with a sequel. Francis Ford Coppola achieved this when he lost best director for \u201cThe Godfather\u201d (1972) but won the category with \u201cThe Godfather Part II\u201d (1974), which took home six Oscars that night, including best picture. Could the \u201cGladiator\u201d franchise follow a similar playbook? Washington\u2019s fun and sinister portrayal of the villainous Macrinus, a former slave who plots to control Rome, stands as one of his most charismatic and riveting performances. Rocking the most jaw-dropping costume fits and a pair of hypnotizing earrings, his work harks back to his second Oscar win as the corrupt narcotics officer Alonzo in \u201cTraining Day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tVillain roles have traditionally performed well in the supporting actor category, with past winners such as Javier Bardem (\u201cNo Country for Old Men\u201d), Christoph Waltz (\u201cInglourious Basterds\u201d) and Heath Ledger (\u201cThe Dark Knight\u201d). Washington came close to securing a third Oscar fairly recently with his self-directed role in \u201cFences\u201d (2016), only to come up short to Casey Affleck for \u201cManchester by the Sea,\u201d even after winning the SAG Award. However, with a seemingly thinner roster of contenders and no clear frontrunner emerging, Washington could be positioned as the new favorite to take it all.
