These hydrothermal vents belch warm towers of elements that draw clusters of animal life, such as tube worms.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2f2r8qf000j356mpq217mvx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Scientists have been intrigued by the vents, and the types of creatures that live around them, for half a century. Overturning small portions of Earth\u2019s crust revealed tiny tube worm larvae as well as some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/10\/16\/science\/life-below-seafloor-hydrothermal-vents\">tube worms that reached 1.6 feet (0.5 meter) long<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2f2r8qf000p356mbjwfnj64@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The finding suggests unique ecosystems on the seafloor and within the subseafloor are connected, allowing life to thrive above and below the ocean bed.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2f2r8qf000q356mqdloc6m2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            If you\u2019ve ever longed for carbs, it may be an instinctual craving that could predate our existence as a species.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2f2r8qf000r356mvpaomy2q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            New research has traced the evolution of a gene, called AMY1, that produces the enzyme amylase. It enables humans to break down starchy foods such as pasta, bread and potatoes for energy.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2f2r8qf000s356mx88xhm7j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The expansion of this gene likely began hundreds of thousands of years ago \u2014 well before the beginning of agriculture, and even before Neanderthals and Homo sapiens split, when ancient humans <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/10\/18\/science\/carb-love-origins-carbohydrate-wellness\">added certain carbohydrates to their prehistoric menu<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2f2r8qf000u356mo2krnott@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            SpaceX\u2019s powerful Starship rocket lifted off from Boca Chica, Texas, on its fifth test flight last Sunday \u2014 and this time, the trial demonstrated the rapid recovery and reusability of its rocket boosters through an unprecedented feat of engineering.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2f2r8qf000v356m96sim3i4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Stunning video showed a pair of massive metal pincers called\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/10\/13\/science\/spacex-starship-test-flight-5-launch\">\u201cchopsticks\u201d capturing the mega rocket booster in midair<\/a>\u00a0after it had broken away from the spacecraft.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2f2r8qf000w356mm1i0v3es@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Separately, luxury fashion house Prada and commercial space company Axiom Space revealed the new design for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/10\/16\/style\/prada-spacesuit-nasa-artemis-2026\/index.html\">spacesuits the Artemis III astronauts will wear on the moon<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2f2r8qf000x356mnhgq42bq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology are developing a wearable robotic system called \u201cSuperLimbs\u201d to help astronauts recover from falls. In the moon\u2019s partial gravity, it took NASA astronaut Charlie Duke\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/science\/superlimbs-wearable-robotic-limbs-astronauts-hnk-spc\/index.html\">three attempts to get up after falling on the moon<\/a>\u00a0in 1972 while he tested lunar soil.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2f2r8qf000y356mw7o6gw1g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Scientists in 1854 first unearthed fossils of an alligator-size arthropod that lived 300 million years ago and resembled a giant millipede.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2f2r8qf000z356me420mk7p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But many mysteries about the creature called Arthropleura have endured, and it would take another 170 years before researchers found a specimen with a complete head.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2f2r8qf0010356mk9rkmh3t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Scans of the well-preserved fossils, still trapped in stone, showed that Arthropleura had a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/10\/18\/science\/arthropleura-giant-arthropod-fossil\">body like a millipede, a head like a centipede<\/a> and eyes like a crustacean.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2f2r8qf0011356mb4byavs2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The discovery is not only changing how researchers understand the way that giant arthropods lived but also sheds light on the close evolutionary connections between centipedes and millipedes.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2f2r8qf0013356m4t8pzo53@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Researchers strongly suspect that the subsurface ocean on Europa, one of Jupiter\u2019s moons, is a potentially habitable environment for life, and now NASA\u2019s Europa Clipper mission is on its way to investigate.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2f2r8qf0014356mwf7jnryf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The spacecraft lifted off from Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Monday and will arrive in orbit around Jupiter and its intriguing moons in April 2030.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" probe is NASA\u2019s largest spacecraft built for a planetary mission, and it will conduct 49 flybys of Europa, eventually coming incredibly close to its surface.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Instruments such as ice-penetrating radar will study the ocean below the moon\u2019s thick ice shell, and a magnetometer will\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/10\/14\/science\/europa-clipper-nasa-launch\/index.html\">\u201csniff\u201d particles released by plumes<\/a> that rise up through cracks in the frozen surface to analyze the body of water\u2019s composition.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2f2r8qf0017356mwsky9jr3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n
