It felt like the end. The chances of a second-half fightback appeared remote.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, against the odds, that was exactly what United delivered. This comeback will ease the scrutiny on him and has surely kept him safe, for now at least.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><em>Mark Critchley<\/em><\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5855204\" src=\"https:\/\/static01.nyt.com\/athletic\/uploads\/wp\/2024\/10\/19124734\/10-19-Man-Utd-vs.-Brentford-match-dashboard-wide.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<h2><b>Why were United angry with De Ligt\u2019s head injury?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Ten Hag has spent the majority of 2024 lamenting defensive injuries, but few have had as immediate dire consequences as the one suffered by De Ligt against <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"689\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/football\/team\/brentford\/\">Brentford<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The trouble began in the 11th minute when De Ligt collided with <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"dccgZisIktDubbYs\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/football\/player\/kevin-schade-dccgZisIktDubbYs\/\">Kevin Schade<\/a>\u2019s knee, gashing the top of his head. Why didn\u2019t United\u2019s medical team bandage De Ligt\u2019s head on the first attempt? Why was the corner allowed to go ahead with De Ligt off the field of play? And why did Barrott send the Dutchman off to receive further treatment?<\/p>\n<p>The answer to the third question, at least, is stated clearly in the IFAB rulebook:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe referee\u2026 ensures that any player bleeding leaves the field of play. The player may only re-enter on receiving a signal from the referee, who must be satisfied that the bleeding has stopped and there is no blood on the equipment.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>De Ligt returned for the second half after receiving further treatment. Ultimately the controversy was forgotten amid United\u2019s second-half recovery.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><em>Carl Anka<\/em><\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<h2><b>Garnacho sparks end of goal drought<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>There was a moment towards the end of the first half when Hojlund trod on Nathan Collins\u2019 foot, sending the Brentford defender to the turf in agony.<\/p>\n<p>Hojlund, ever the sport, asked for play to be stopped so Collins could get some treatment, only to spring into life when play continued and the ball was played into his feet, firing a shot just wide.<\/p>\n<p>When the ball went out of play, he then went back to asking for help for Collins. It was all a bit too nice from the striker and his side spent much of the first half matching his politeness in front of <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"OIfvSC3wxRe9cvPW\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/football\/player\/mark-flekken-OIfvSC3wxRe9cvPW\/\">Mark Flekken<\/a>\u2019s goal instead of forcing the issue.<\/p>\n<p>United managed 10 shots in the first half, but when half-time came, United had a cumulative xG of 0.28 compared to Brentford\u2019s 0.83 (for those who don\u2019t speak stats, that is not good).<\/p>\n<p>This is why Garnacho\u2019s goal \u2014 set up superbly with a crossfield pass from <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"xgQlXcNj79jwXiD4\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/football\/player\/marcus-rashford-xgQlXcNj79jwXiD4\/\">Marcus Rashford<\/a> \u2014 brought things into sharp relief. A clever line-breaking pass from <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"IdnyhU0AWBdF3utd\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/football\/player\/christian-eriksen-IdnyhU0AWBdF3utd\/\">Christian Eriksen<\/a> left Brentford defenders flat-footed before a flick-on from <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"qr6VV7sJwbrbqULf\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/football\/player\/bruno-fernandes-qr6VV7sJwbrbqULf\/\">Bruno Fernandes<\/a> freed the <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"777\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/football\/team\/denmark\/\">Denmark<\/a> international in the penalty box and he dinked over Flekken.<\/p>\n<p>United have not been prolific goalscorers under Ten Hag, but in Garnacho, they have a winger willing to have a go and test goalkeepers whenever possible. The Argentine finished proceedings having five shots on target, one shot off it, and two further shots that were blocked.<\/p>\n<p>His tenacious ball-carrying provides an outlet for his side whenever they are on the back foot and his link-up play with Rashford and Hojlund has potential. United took time to find their shooting boots on Saturday. I didn\u2019t understand why he was sent off.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI went over to Matthijs and he said, \u2018It is dry blood and I have to come off I don\u2019t know why\u2019. A huge moment because Brentford is very good at corners and you miss one of your best headers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPressure is always there, we have to win every game and when you are 1-0 down, you have to see how we turned it around. We felt some injustice and used it is as fuel.
