{"id":116143,"date":"2024-10-20T01:12:46","date_gmt":"2024-10-19T18:12:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=116143"},"modified":"2024-10-20T01:12:46","modified_gmt":"2024-10-19T18:12:46","slug":"puzzle-master-will-shortz-pieces-together-his-recovery-from-a-stroke","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=116143","title":{"rendered":"Puzzle master Will Shortz pieces together his recovery from a stroke"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-editable=\"content\" itemprop=\"articleBody\" data-reorderable=\"content\">\n<p>\n    <cite class=\"source__cite\"><br \/>\n      <span class=\"source__location\" data-editable=\"location\"\/><br \/>\n      <span class=\"source__text\" data-editable=\"source\">CNN<\/span><br \/>\n        \u00a0\u2014\u00a0<br \/>\n    <\/cite>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2f09m67000m2cqc3ufv0qjk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            One Sunday night in February, <a href=\"https:\/\/willshortz.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Will Shortz<\/a> was at his desk at home in Pleasantville, New York, when he leaned to his left and realized he couldn\u2019t sit back up straight.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2f0a1nh0006356mr5cerdpz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI knew immediately I had had a stroke,\u201d he told CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2f0a1nh0007356mdkny9e3u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The stroke was on the right side of his brain, leaving the left side of his body \u201ccompletely incapacitated\u201d and causing his speech to be slurred, said Shortz, 72.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2f0a1nh0008356mzl0sb66j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It didn\u2019t affect his ability to solve and make puzzles, he said \u2013 a gift for the millions of people who enjoy his work as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/by\/will-shortz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">crossword editor<\/a> of the New York Times and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/people\/2101852\/will-shortz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">puzzlemaster<\/a> of NPR\u2019s \u201cWeekend Edition Sunday,\u201d roles he\u2019s held for decades.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2f0a1nh0009356m7zv9943x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            With a right-brain injury, \u201chis ability to say the right words, write and gesture, as well as understand those things, are not likely to be affected,\u201d said Dr. Sanjay Gupta, a practicing neurosurgeon and CNN\u2019s chief medical correspondent. But\u00a0the opposite side of the body is affected, which left Shortz with the weakness on his left side.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2f0a1nh000a356my8y841xo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Strokes are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/stroke\/about\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">caused<\/a> when a blood clot blocks blood flow to the brain or, less frequently, when a blood vessel ruptures and causes bleeding in the brain. Almost 800,000 people in the United States are estimated to have a stroke each year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/stroke\/data-research\/facts-stats\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according<\/a> to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and more than 165,000 die from stroke, making it one of the country\u2019s leading <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/fastats\/leading-causes-of-death.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">causes of death<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2f75n2100003b6m0ztnhs5y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Patients can recover, even fully, with the help of months of rehabilitation work.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2f0a1nh000b356mnyxblu88@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Eight months into his recovery, Shortz said he feels \u201cgreat, but it\u2019s just that my body isn\u2019t perfect yet.\u201d He shared with CNN the details of his rehabilitation, what he wishes he\u2019d done differently from the start and how strategies that he uses to tackle crossword puzzles have helped him through some of the hardest parts of recovery.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2f0a1nh000d356mfogyot0d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That evening in February, Shortz knew that he needed to get emergency treatment quickly. But because it was winter and he was dressed for a game of table tennis \u2013 another of what he calls his \u201cobsessions\u201d \u2013 he decided to change into warmer clothes and use the bathroom before going to the hospital.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2f0a1nh000e356m1h45z446@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It was there<strong> <\/strong>that he \u201ccrumpled to the floor,\u201d he said. Without his phone and unable to get back up or even to crawl, Shortz began to worry. Somehow, though, he said he was able to \u201csquirm like a worm on my back\u201d into his office to get his phone and call his partner, who came immediately and called an ambulance.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2f0a1nh000f356mxnn4fj0x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Even with the 15 minutes he spent on the floor, Shortz said, he was at the hospital within an hour. Such quick care, stroke experts emphasize, is crucial.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2f0a1nh000g356mehouwhw5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cTime is brain,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/biographies\/lin-michelle-p-y-m-d-m-p-h\/bio-20433938\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Michelle Lin<\/a>, a neurologist at Mayo Clinic Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida. \u201cFor every single minute that there\u2019s a delay in presenting to a doctor\u2019s office or emergency room, about 2 million neurons <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ahajournals.org\/doi\/pdf\/10.1161\/01.str.0000196957.55928.ab\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">die<\/a>.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2f0a1nh000h356m38m23o5p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Lin said she recommends that people who suspect they\u2019ve had a stroke call 911 for an ambulance to get emergency care as fast as possible.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2f7sglf00043b6mytmc3h85@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            One way to recognize stroke symptoms, she said, is to use the mnemonic device <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nm.org\/healthbeat\/healthy-tips\/stroke-warning-signs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">B.E. F.A.S.T.<\/a> It stands for:\n    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/list\/instances\/cm2fa1xvk00013b5vdqf6cnll@published\" class=\"list \" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n<ul data-editable=\"items\" class=\"list__items list__items--ul\">\n<li data-editable=\"items.0.text\" class=\"list__item inline-placeholder\">Balance<\/li>\n<li data-editable=\"items.1.text\" class=\"list__item inline-placeholder\">Eyes<\/li>\n<li data-editable=\"items.2.text\" class=\"list__item inline-placeholder\">Face<\/li>\n<li data-editable=\"items.3.text\" class=\"list__item inline-placeholder\">Arms<\/li>\n<li data-editable=\"items.4.text\" class=\"list__item inline-placeholder\">Speech<\/li>\n<li data-editable=\"items.5.text\" class=\"list__item inline-placeholder\">Time<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2f0a1nh000o356m08udqaz4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            If people notice changes in balance or vision, weakness or numbness in their face or arms, or trouble with speech, it\u2019s important to seek emergency care in as short a time as possible, Lin emphasized.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2f0a1nh000q356maz6qipiw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Shortz said he spent more than a week in emergency care at the hospital, where staffers got him on his feet \u201cas quickly as they could.\u201d From there, he spent several weeks in a rehabilitation center doing both occupational and physical therapy before moving to a \u201csubacute\u201d facility for a month. There, he did 2\u00bd to three hours of therapy every day.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2f0a1nh000r356mo8bhhqqc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThat\u2019s the kind of physical therapy and occupational therapy we hope all of our patients could get,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/profiles.ucsf.edu\/andy.josephson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. S. Andrew Josephson<\/a>, professor and chair of the Department of Neurology at the University of California San Francisco. \u201cIt\u2019s a long process to get the brain to recover and rewire, but we have more and more science that tells us that these types of aggressive rehabilitation approaches end up helping people have better outcomes.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2f0a1nh000s356m3s8dkk6r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            One thing Shortz wishes he\u2019d done differently is to work his left arm as early and as much as he worked on everything else. Initially, he said, he treated it as you would an injury that needs rest to heal on its own.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2f0a1nh000t356mbce9y4rv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI didn\u2019t use it very much,\u201d he recalled. \u201cBut when you\u2019ve had a stroke, what you want is for your brain to reconnect or make new connection with your neurons, your nervous system. So I should have been using my arm as much as possible from the start.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2f6uf1l000c356miyhr0bzi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            By April, Shortz was facing an important event, one he hadn\u2019t missed since he founded it in 1978: the annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crosswordtournament.com\/info\/history.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Crossword Puzzle Tournament<\/a>. He left the subacute rehabilitation facility, went home and went to the tournament in a wheelchair.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2f6uf1l000d356m2xih2o23@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI\u2019m so glad I did,\u201d Shortz said. \u201cWhen I was wheeled into the ballroom with almost 1,000 people, there was a standing ovation, which was very rewarding.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2f6w704000j356m02tlcgd4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Since then, Shortz said, he\u2019s continued therapy seven days a week. He does outpatient physical and occupational therapy at a nearby hospital twice a week, working with a therapist at home and going to a local place called <a href=\"https:\/\/rehabologym.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rehabologym<\/a> that has an approach he particularly enjoys: \u201cYou play games and do exercises,\u201d Shortz said. vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2g8xqkm00003b5vpbr4id90@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Varying exercises in that way is an important part of strengthening the brain, Gupta said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2g95luf00083b5vzshp42nh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe best way to exercise the brain is to work different parts of it \u2013 so adding in movement, like Will, and doing new activities is what helps keep the brain growing and working at its optimal level,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2f6w704000k356mgn0wghe7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Shortz said he can now walk with a cane and is starting to get some use of his left hand back, and he feels that he\u2019s still improving.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2f6w704000l356m0yfdjw3v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI\u2019ve heard and read that all the progress you can make in recovery from a stroke is going to happen within three to six months,\u201d he said. \u201cA lot of stroke victims have written me since then that that is not true, that you continue to make improvement, really for the rest of your life.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2f6w704000m356muzjbes5e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It\u2019s true that recovery can continue beyond what was previously thought of as the \u201cgolden window\u201d of the first six months, Lin said. \u201cI do not think that there\u2019s a timestamp to recovery, because our brain is really quite plastic,\u201d she said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2f6w61d000h356m4r0ltib8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Josephson agreed. \u201cWe know that the brain continues to heal for many years to come,\u201d he added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2f6w704000o356mrgw1in8p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Shortz said the hardest times in his recovery have been when he\u2019s hit plateaus and started to wonder, \u201cIs this how I\u2019m going to have to be for the rest of my life?\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/factbox\/instances\/cm2f7wino00063b6miyu5cckw@published\" data-component-name=\"factbox\" data-article-gutter=\"true\" class=\"factbox_inline-small data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In those times, he said, \u201cit\u2019s like any time you\u2019re faced with a problem that seems insurmountable or seems very complex: The thing to do is just pick some one small element of it and work at that.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2f6w704000q356mrdut2efw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI have always kept working at this, and then I have a new breakthrough,\u201d Shortz said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2f6w704000r356m8dxpgt9z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            If that sounds a lot like how one might try to tackle a crossword puzzle, that\u2019s no coincidence.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2f6w704000s356mzysrhswl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cLike solving a crossword puzzle,\u201d Shortz said, \u201ceven if you don\u2019t know certain things that are in the puzzle, tackle what you do know. Get those under your belt. And each thing that you do will lead on to something else you can do.
