A decade ago,\u00a0<em>SNL\u00a0<\/em>was celebrating its 40th anniversary, and one of that season\u2019s high watermarks was <a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/person\/michael-keaton\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\">Michael Keaton\u2019s<\/a> triumphant return to host after a two-decade absence. His\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=AFRZGFLyxjY\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"3\">monologue with Taran Killam and Bobby Moynihan\u00a0<\/a>remains a personal highlight, particularly as it foreshadowed the eventual reprisal of his two signature movie characters, Batman and Beetlejuice.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_3-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Speaking of,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/beetlejuice-beetlejuice-macarthur-park-day-o-exclusive-8708800\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\"><em>Beetlejuice Beetlejuice<\/em><\/a>\u00a0\u2014 a long-delayed legacyquel \u2014 is out in theaters and apparently not terrible. I have not seen it, in part out of fear. If nothing else, it justifies Keaton\u2019s fourth hosting appearance. As former cast member Gary Kroeger recently noted to me: \u201c<em>SNL<\/em>\u00a0understands its legacy and its roots.\u00a0Bringing back classic hosts and musical acts anchors the show with the past but also keeps it relevant.\u00a0Michael Keaton and <a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/snl-recap-season-50-ariana-grande-8726858\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\">last week\u2019s Stevie Nicks<\/a> brilliantly redefine themselves as artists, and having\u00a0<em>SNL\u00a0<\/em>acknowledge that is a real plus to the show and its legacy.\u201d\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_5-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Kroeger also points out that when Keaton first hosted back in season 7, \u201che was big off of\u00a0<em>Night Shift,\u00a0<\/em>but the real apex of his career was ahead of him still.\u201d When Keaton hosted for the second time, he was riding\u00a0<em>Batman Return<\/em>\u2019s momentum before disappearing into character actor-land for a few years, eventually hitting a comeback with\u00a0<em>Birdman<\/em>\u00a0\u2014 which brings us back to<em> SNL<\/em>40 and now, tonight. <em>SNL<\/em> LORE, you have to love it. He\u2019s interrupting and bullying. Harris is looking to go viral \u2014 she even quotes Adam Driver\u2019s now-iconic line from <a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/megalopolis-review-francis-ford-coppola-film-bloated-dull-8710050\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"5\"><em>Megalopolis<\/em><\/a> (which costars Chloe Fineman!). The crowd applauds Rudolph a few times.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_15-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Baier shows a misleading clip of former President Trump (James Austin Johnson) quoting <em>Big<\/em> and <em>Freaky Friday<\/em>, as well as a \u201cja\u2019brilliant\u201d Ja\u2019Biden (a <a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/snl-dana-carvey-jennifer-coolidge-impression-last-minute-8730971\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">returning Dana Carvey<\/a>). Baier also cuts back to Trump at his Univision town hall as he dances to gay anthems like \u201cIt\u2019s Raining Men\u201d \u2014 a song famously co-written by Paul Shaffer!\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<figure id=\"mntl-sc-block_19-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block ew-sc-block-image mntl-sc-block-universal-image mntl-sc-block-image--no-theme mntl-sc-block-image figure-square figure-high-res\"><figcaption id=\"mntl-figure-caption_2-0\" class=\"comp mntl-figure-caption text-utility-100 text-utility-100 figure-article-caption\"> <span class=\"figure-article-caption-text\">Alec Baldwin as Bret Baier on &#8216;SNL&#8217;.<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"figure-article-caption-owner\"><\/p>\n<p>NBC<\/p>\n<p><\/span><br \/>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_20-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> This is pretty good \u2014 watch it! Good pace, fun moments \u2014 the one-liners and dialogue actually crackle for once. My one critique is clearly, no one is waiting for or needing more Alec Baldwin on the show. He is not even in the latest <em>Beetlejuice<\/em>! I think it\u2019s cool he\u2019s planning to reunite with his\u00a0<em>Beetlejuice<\/em>\u00a0costar, Geena Davis, at a Comic Con in New Jersey, but will we see him with Keaton tonight? Or no? I am confused.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_22-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Gary Kroeger says, on this season\u2019s cold openings, they \u201chave become an institution.\u00a0There is an expectation of up to the second relevance, a fun-to-watch impression, and a comment \u2014 or comments \u2014 on the state of their candidacy.\u00a0That&#8217;s where the satire finds itself, and sometimes, that satire can be interpreted in different ways according to each viewer&#8217;s take on the characters.\u00a0One person may perceive a characteristic as a criticism, and another may see it as a charm.\u00a0For me, it&#8217;s more interesting to not be sure what the actor\/writer has in mind, so I get to apply my own opinion.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"heading-toc\" id=\"toc-monologue\"\/><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"mntl-sc-block_24-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block ew-sc-block-heading mntl-sc-block-heading\"> <span class=\"mntl-sc-block-heading__text\"> Monologue <\/span> <\/h2>\n<p><iframe id=\"mntl-sc-block_25-0-iframe\" class=\"mntl-sc-block-embed--iframe lazyload\" allowfullscreen=\"false\" frameborder=\"0\" sandbox=\"allow-forms allow-popups allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-top-navigation-by-user-activation\" title=\"Michael Keaton 'SNL' monologue \" data-expand=\"300\" data-src=\"\/embed?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3D45aCtxpL_40&amp;id=mntl-sc-block_25-0-iframe&amp;options=e30%3D&amp;docId=8730203\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_27-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Keaton recalls that when\u00a0<em>SNL\u00a0<\/em>started in 1975, he was a PA on\u00a0<em>Mr. Roger&#8217;s Neighborhood<\/em>. In a bizarre moment, Andy Samberg (who isn\u2019t a cast member) and Mikey Day come out as Beetlejuice and want him to say, \u201cIt\u2019s Showtime\u201d \u2014 this is what they did for his monologue last time, folks. Weak!\u00a0\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_29-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> I do enjoy their explanation for why Samberg isn\u2019t in this week\u2019s cold open \u2014 just odd to shoehorn a cameo into the monologue. And Sarah Sherman\u2019s moment is cute. MA-TV gets thrown on the screen; it is so suggestive.\u00a0\u201cDo those cookies come in different ethnicities?\u201d asks a caller. Preacher Kenan Thompson is more understanding than Michael Keaton\u2019s dad.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_54-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Dismukes says he has written a song to explain their love. And he goes for it with a ukulele: an origin story for Train\u2019s \u201cHey Soul Sister\u201d. The crowd is muted, but you have to respect Dismukes\u2019 commitment. He wins over his parents if nothing else \u2014 they love their corny, awful white boy tune. In the process, he loses Kenan. He retracts his blessing.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"heading-toc\" id=\"toc-tiktok\"\/><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"mntl-sc-block_56-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block ew-sc-block-heading mntl-sc-block-heading\"> <span class=\"mntl-sc-block-heading__text\"> &#8220;TikTok&#8221; <\/span> <\/h2>\n<p><iframe id=\"mntl-sc-block_57-0-iframe\" class=\"mntl-sc-block-embed--iframe lazyload\" allowfullscreen=\"false\" frameborder=\"0\" sandbox=\"allow-forms allow-popups allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-top-navigation-by-user-activation\" title=\"'TikTok'\" data-expand=\"300\" data-src=\"\/embed?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3Dd6ZwQMxqx1M&amp;id=mntl-sc-block_57-0-iframe&amp;options=e30%3D&amp;docId=8730203\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_59-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> <em>SNL<\/em> \u2014 even reluctantly \u2014 facing that it\u2019s 2024 is always a good thing. This is fairly hit-and-miss \u2014 there are lots of references and hyper online deep cuts. Still, I much prefer this format to, say, a game show or commercial parody. So props for staying modern, even if the format is a challenge.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_61-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Another \u201cvery demure, very mindful\u201d reference. And appearances from JAJ\u2019s Trump (who, like Billie Eilish, chides Bowen Yang\u2019s singer) as well as Rudolph\u2019s thirsty, trending Kamala Harris. Dana Carvey\u2019s Biden pops up too to dance.
