The comet won\u2019t be visible in the night sky\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/solar-system\/comets\/1p-halley\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">until 2061<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2dq19hh00053b5vk425sv5y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But the debris the comet leaves in its trail \u2014 otherwise known as the Orionid meteor shower \u2014 causes meteors to streak through Earth\u2019s atmosphere.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2dq19hh00063b5v11mp61sn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The annual celestial display will be most visible during its peak Sunday night into Monday, with an estimated rate of 10 to 20 meteors per hour, according to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amsmeteors.org\/meteor-showers\/meteor-shower-calendar\/#Orionids\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Meteor Society<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2dq19hh00073b5vqct5zeg3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The best time to see the Orionids will be any time after midnight when constellation Orion \u2014 which is the Orionids\u2019\u00a0radiant, or the area from which\u00a0meteors\u00a0appear to originate \u2014 is high in the sky, said Robert Lunsford, the fireball report coordinator for the American Meteor Society. The display will be visible in all parts of the world except Antarctica, where the sun currently\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeanddate.com\/astronomy\/antarctica\/south-pole\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">does not set<\/a>, he added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2dq19hh00083b5vuj5gzyfy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But even a few days following peak activity, the Orionids are still expected to produce a similar rate of meteors. \u201cThe Orionids have a kind of a flat peak \u2014 a plateau of activity,\u201d Lunsford said. \u201cSo, if it\u2019s cloudy on that particular (peak) night, the night after it should be very close to the same activity you would see before.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2dq19hh00093b5vm8amgpmf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And later in October, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/10\/16\/science\/october-full-hunters-moon\/index.html\">supermoon known as hunter\u2019s moon<\/a>\u00a0will interfere less with meteor viewing. Appearing large and bright, this moon reached its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/10\/16\/science\/october-full-hunters-moon\/index.html\">full phase<\/a>\u00a0on Thursday and will continue to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/moon.nasa.gov\/moon-observation\/daily-moon-guide\/?intent=011#1729171296009::0::\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wane until<\/a>\u00a0the end of the month. Try observing meteors in the opposite direction from the moon to avoid its reflected light that could hinder visibility of faint particles, Lunsford suggested. The Orionids are active until November 22.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2dq19hi000a3b5vif5e3ct1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            As Earth orbits the sun, it encounters the debris trail from Halley\u2019s comet\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/solar-system\/meteors-meteorites\/orionids\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">twice a year<\/a>.\u00a0The first occurs in May when particles from the comet\u2019s outbound leg cause the annual Eta Aquariids. The second trail, produced during Halley\u2019s return to the sun from the outer solar system, creates the Orionids in October.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2dq19hi000b3b5v5tsp3x6e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When the particles enter Earth\u2019s atmosphere, they burn up and create the meteors we see streaking in the sky. The bigger particles can produce what are known as fireballs, meteors that are brighter than the planet Venus,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/solar-system\/meteors-meteorites\/facts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to NASA<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2dq19hi000c3b5v1oiwtasi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The particles from asteroids, which are made up of rock and metal, sometimes make it to the ground, where they are known as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/solar-system\/meteors-meteorites\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">meteorites<\/a>, Lunsford said. But a comet composed of ice, frozen gases and rocks is typically too fragile to survive a trip through Earth\u2019s atmosphere, he added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2dq19hi000d3b5v6dvd9muj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For sky-gazers looking to spot a meteor,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/solar-system\/meteors-meteorites\/orionids\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NASA recommends<\/a>\u00a0sitting outside up to 30 minutes beforehand to let your eyes adjust to the dark. And if you\u2019re able do your viewing at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/solar-system\/skywatching\/how-to-find-good-places-to-stargaze\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">higher altitudes<\/a>, the clearer the sky will be and the less moonlight will scatter, he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2dq19hi000e3b5vlus44sl9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The best part of viewing a meteor shower, Lunsford said, is \u201cgetting in touch with nature and being part of the universe. Everything up there is in motion. So no one night is the same \u2014 everything has moved a little bit \u2014 and no year is the same.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2dq19hi000f3b5vp7t0wolb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            If you missed\u00a0Comet C\/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS\u00a0and its closest pass of Earth on October 12, you still have a chance to see the comet until early November, NASA predicts. Look for the celestial wonder in the western part of the night sky shortly after sunset.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2dq19hi000g3b5vjkpl44b7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Astronomers originally estimated the comet to circle back in about 80,000 years, but as of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nasa.gov\/Watch_the_Skies\/2024\/10\/02\/ancient-oort-cloud-comet-to-make-first-documented-pass-by-earth-in-mid-october\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">October 14,<\/a> observational data revealed the comet had a new path that could remove it from our solar system completely.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2dq19hi000h3b5vsadjto9z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            There are two full moons remaining for 2024 \u2014 the beaver moon, which is also a supermoon, on November 15 and the cold moon on December 15,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.farmersalmanac.com\/full-moon-dates-and-times\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to the Farmers\u2019 Almanac<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2dq19hi000i3b5vpkg707kp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Meanwhile, sky-gazers can anticipate a busy meteor shower season to close out 2024.
