By controlling a virtual simulation of a rover, they were able to manipulate a robotic arm to dig a sample of pretend lunar regolith (called simulant). The process negates the need for camera feeds, which can lag because of the 1.3-second time delay between <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\"><u>Earth<\/u><\/a> and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\"><u>the moon<\/u><\/a>. In other words, it gives the user a sense of touch, mimicking the tactile properties of lunar regolith in <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18135-how-big-is-the-moon.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18135-how-big-is-the-moon.html\"><u>the moon&#8217;s low gravity<\/u><\/a>. This gives teleoperators a greater sense of how much force they have to use to dig into regolith, or to lift up a sample in a scoop. So far, the haptic interactions have only been included in the virtual versions of basic tasks, such as pressing regolith into the ground or dragging a scoop through it, but not yet for more complex tasks.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"hawk-nest\" data-block-type=\"embed\" data-render-type=\"fte\" data-skip=\"dealsy\" data-widget-type=\"seasonal\"\/>\n<p><strong>Related: <\/strong><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/moon-bases-rock-wall-autonomous-excavators\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/moon-bases-rock-wall-autonomous-excavators\"><strong>Moon robots could build stone walls to protect lunar bases from rocket exhaust<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We can adjust how strong <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/classical-gravity.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/classical-gravity.html\"><u>gravity<\/u><\/a> is in this model, and provide haptic feedback, so we could give astronauts a sense of how moon dust would feel and behave in lunar conditions \u2014 which has a sixth of the gravitational pull of the Earth,&#8221; said Louca.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The system could also be used to train astronauts who may one day go to the moon by giving them a realistic simulation of what to expect.<\/p>\n<div id=\"slice-container-newsletterForm-articleInbodyContent-9CLg2VrSM8qtLiPT3wRtCY\" class=\"slice-container newsletter-inbodyContent-slice newsletterForm-articleInbodyContent-9CLg2VrSM8qtLiPT3wRtCY slice-container-newsletterForm\">\n<div data-hydrate=\"true\" class=\"newsletter-form__wrapper newsletter-form__wrapper--inbodyContent\">\n<div class=\"newsletter-form__container\">\n<section class=\"newsletter-form__top-bar\"\/>\n<section class=\"newsletter-form__main-section\">\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Breaking space news, the latest updates on rocket launches, skywatching events and more!<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&#8220;One option could be to have astronauts use this simulation to prepare for upcoming lunar exploration missions,&#8221; said Louca.<\/p>\n<p>However, before that can happen, Louca says there are trust issues to overcome. Previous studies have shown that there is a psychological barrier to trusting whether the virtual system that a user is operating is performing as it should in reality.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Louca&#8217;s team has quantified the efficiency and trustworthiness of their virtual system, finding that, when scooping up regolith simulant, the system was efficient 100% of the time and trustworthy 92.5% of the time. This could be particularly helpful for the challenging task of retrieving sample tubes from a rover and loading them onto another vehicle that would blast off from Mars and bring the samples back to Earth.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As the budget and timeline on NASA&#8217;s Mars current sample-return project have <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-revamp-mars-sample-return-plan\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-revamp-mars-sample-return-plan\">spiraled out of control<\/a>, the space agency has solicited industry to help develop a solution. <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/rocket-lab-mars-sample-return-proposal-nasa\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/rocket-lab-mars-sample-return-proposal-nasa\">Rocket Lab won a contract<\/a> recently to conduct a detailed study into a possible solution for retrieving the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/perseverance-mars-rover-sample-return\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/perseverance-mars-rover-sample-return\">Perseverance rover&#8217;s samples<\/a>, although it may be too soon for teleoperation to play a role.
