You may just be better off taking Elon Musk&#8217;s word for it instead and saving the rounds for the shooting range, or at the very least, for the rusted-out husk of some old clunker in a junkyard. Like a civilized person.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s the hard lesson learned by one Cybertruck owner\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/the-byte\/man-shoots-cybertruck-not-bulletproof\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reportedly<\/a> an adult film star named Dante Colle\u2014who unloaded a round into the tailgate of his truck and filmed it for an unintentionally viral video. But instead of deflecting the bullet, he&#8217;s left with a giant hole in the tailgate. And maybe elsewhere, depending on where the bullet went. The unfortunate affair has been making the rounds this week.\u00a0<\/p>\n<section class=\"embed-item\" contenteditable=\"false\" draggable=\"true\" data-widget=\"embed\" data-embed-code=\"%3Cblockquote%20class%3D%22twitter-tweet%22%20data-media-max-width%3D%22560%22%3E%3Cp%20lang%3D%22zxx%22%20dir%3D%22ltr%22%3E%3Ca%20href%3D%22https%3A%2F%2Ft.co%2FUkNgUiGHMz%22%3Epic.twitter.com%2FUkNgUiGHMz%3C%2Fa%3E%3C%2Fp%3E%26mdash%3B%20Fck%20Around%20N%20Find%20Out%20(%40FAFO_TV)%20%3Ca%20href%3D%22https%3A%2F%2Ftwitter.com%2FFAFO_TV%2Fstatus%2F1846414214602084364%3Fref_src%3Dtwsrc%255Etfw%22%3EOctober%2016%2C%202024%3C%2Fa%3E%3C%2Fblockquote%3E%20%3Cscript%20async%20src%3D%22https%3A%2F%2Fplatform.twitter.com%2Fwidgets.js%22%20charset%3D%22utf-8%22%3E%3C%2Fscript%3E\">\u00a0<\/section>\n<p>It&#8217;s unclear from this video what type of weapon he shot the truck with. He&#8217;s also not the first person who has tried to shoot at their own Cybertruck, a stunt that often yields <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/710301\/tesla-cybertruck-shot-gun-bullets-real-world\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"0\" data-params=\"%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22710301%22%2C%22section%22%3A%221%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22tesla-cybertruck-shot-gun-bullets-real-world%22%7D\">what might charitably be called mixed results<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This keeps happening because way back in 2019 when the Cybertruck was first unveiled, Tesla CEO Elon Musk <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motortrend.com\/news\/tesla-cybertruck-electric-pickup-bulletproof-stainless-steel-body\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">claimed<\/a> it would be at least somewhat bulletproof\u2014at least, to\u00a09mm rounds fired into the doors. Prototypes were seen <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/692836\/tesla-cybertruck-tommy-gun-bulletproof-test\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"0\" data-params=\"%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22692836%22%2C%22section%22%3A%221%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22tesla-cybertruck-tommy-gun-bulletproof-test%22%7D\">peppered with bullets from a Tommy Gun<\/a>, which may look cool but is hardly up to par with more modern weapons. And last year, Tesla released videos ahead of the Cybertruck&#8217;s actual debut showing it standing up to\u00a09mm handgun and\u00a0submachine gun rounds as well. Since then it&#8217;s been generally accepted\u2014but again, not something you want to discover in real life\u2014that the Cybertruck&#8217;s doors are at least somewhat capable of standing up to small-arms fire.\u00a0<\/p>\n<section contenteditable=\"false\" draggable=\"true\" data-widget=\"video\">\n<div class=\"video-wrapper\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"sizer\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAABAAAAAJCAYAAAA7KqwyAAAAGXRFWHRTb2Z0d2FyZQBBZG9iZSBJbWFnZVJlYWR5ccllPAAAABpJREFUeNpi\/P\/\/PwMlgImBQjBqwLAwACDAAOVfAw9\/ZDvcAAAAAElFTkSuQmCC\" alt=\"\"\/> <\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Cybertruck Bullet Test\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/teRRk-0KHus?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<p>Other YouTubers and influencers have sought to test its limits since then. One video host hit the truck with a\u00a0.50 caliber sniper rifle round, which, understandably, <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/711817\/tesla-cybertruck-bullets-50-caliber-rifle\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"0\" data-params=\"%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22711817%22%2C%22section%22%3A%221%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22tesla-cybertruck-bullets-50-caliber-rifle%22%7D\">ripped right through the doors<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The tailgate seems to be another matter, and if this host hit it with a more powerful handgun, it didn&#8217;t have a chance. And as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motortrend.com\/news\/tesla-cybertruck-electric-pickup-bulletproof-stainless-steel-body\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Motor Trend<\/em><\/a> noted last year, stainless steel is generally not used for ballistic purposes nor certified as such.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So while this is still a clever marketing gimmick, remember: you don&#8217;t need to pump your vehicle full of lead to &#8220;find out&#8221; for yourself.
