{"id":116559,"date":"2024-10-21T04:04:54","date_gmt":"2024-10-20T21:04:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=116559"},"modified":"2024-10-21T04:04:54","modified_gmt":"2024-10-20T21:04:54","slug":"partial-results-dw-10-20-2024","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=116559","title":{"rendered":"partial results \u2013 DW \u2013 10\/20\/2024"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Moldovans appeared to have rejected plans for the former Soviet republic\u00a0to add its goal of joining\u00a0the European Union to the constitution, the results from 40% of ballots in the country&#8217;s referendum showed on Sunday evening.<\/p>\n<p>The election commission said that 56% of voters from the partial count had said &#8220;no&#8221; to the proposal, while 44% had said &#8220;yes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A largely agricultural country of around 2.5 million people, <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/moldova\/t-38385367\">Moldova<\/a> has sought to cut ties with Moscow and <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/moldova-suspends-six-channels-over-ukraine-disinformation\/a-64137437\">move closer to the EU<\/a> since Russia&#8217;s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>The former Soviet republic <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/eu-agrees-on-starting-membership-talks-with-ukraine-moldova\/a-69369180\">began EU membership talks in June<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of the referendum, surveys showed around 55% of Moldovans would support the move, while 34% were\u00a0against it.<\/p>\n<p>For the result to be valid, however, at least 33% of the electorate would need to participate.<\/p>\n<p>Pro-Russian parties had\u00a0urged people to vote &#8220;no&#8221; or boycott the vote altogether.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"placeholder-image master_landscape big\"><img data-format=\"MASTER_LANDSCAPE\" data-id=\"69117399\" data-url=\"https:\/\/static.dw.com\/image\/69117399_${formatId}.jpg\" data-aspect-ratio=\"16\/9\" alt=\"Maia Sandu speaking in Berlin\" style=\"padding-bottom: 56.25%; height: 0; max-height: 0;\"\/><figcaption class=\"img-caption\">Incumbent President Maia Sandu says joining the EU will help improve quality of life in one of Europe&#8217;s poorest nations<small class=\"copyright\">Image: Michele Tantussi\/AFP\/Getty Images<\/small><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Sandu takes narrow lead in the presidential election<\/h2>\n<p>Meanwhile,\u00a0incumbent Maia Sandu was closer to a<a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/moldovas-maia-sandu-i-want-to-be-the-president-of-european-integration\/a-56089364\">\u00a0second term in office<\/a>, after early results in the country&#8217;s presidential election gave her a small lead over her main rival.<\/p>\n<p>With more than 40% of\u00a0votes counted, Sandu had 35% of the votes and so is likely to face her closest competitor Alexandr Stoianoglo\u00a0in the second round. in the EU referendum.<\/p>\n<p>Shor, who was convicted in absentia of fraud last year, is under Western sanctions and denies wrongdoing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Police warned this week that up to a quarter of ballots could be tainted by Russian cash.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities also said they had uncovered a plan that involved hundreds of people being taken to Russia to be trained to stage riots and create &#8220;mass disorder&#8221;
