She either pushed or persuaded them all to jump from the 11th floor balcony of their Salt Lake City hotel room<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">She then followed them, as horrified morning commuters looked on helplessly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The 1978 murder-suicide is perhaps even more shocking when you consider that one of the children &#8211; 15-year-old Rachel (named after her mother) &#8211; survived the 275 foot fall, albeit with horrific injuries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Now confined to a wheelchair, she still believes the wild claims that led to the deaths of her entire family that day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Born Margit Brigitta Eriksson, Rachel&#8217;s trouble arguably began when she met the young and charismatic Charles Bruce Longo at Brigham Young University, <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/utah\/index.html\" id=\"mol-555d8830-8bd6-11ef-bb90-5511238cd93e\" rel=\"noopener\">Utah<\/a>, in 1961.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">She was baptized into the Mormon church, the pair married the following year, and they had four children in rapid succession.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">In the next few years, Longo\u2019s self-belief grew increasingly extreme &#8211; and he started to claim that he was a combination of God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018Unsurprisingly,\u2019 writes Woomer in the book, \u2018Longo and the rest of his family were excommunicated from the Church of Latterday Saints in 1969.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">But his ministry continued. \u2018A small group of followers broke away from the Mormon church and stood by him. Three days later, she was seen gathering her children on the balcony of the hotel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018Multiple eyewitnesses report that the older children stacked chairs one on top of the other to help them climb over the balcony\u2019s railing before willingly jumping to their deaths,\u2019 writes Woomer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018The younger children, it would seem, were not so willing to rejoin their father. There are stories of the younger children struggling to break away from their mother as she lifted them over the railing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018One eyewitness claimed the only resistance he witnessed was from the younger ones, who clung to the railing just long enough for Rachel to pry their hands off the bar and push them herself.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The 38-year-old mother then climbed over the railing and jumped.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Incredibly, 15-year-old Rachel somehow survived, though she had extensive injuries and both her legs were broken.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018Since 1978, Rachel has tried to follow her father\u2019s suicide by attempting to kill herself on several occasions over the years,\u2019 writes Woomer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018As of 2000, she was still part of what is now known as \u201cThe Family of David,\u201d with about a dozen members who all believe they are reincarnated biblical figures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;Rachel herself still holds to the idea that her father is God and will one day return to Earth.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">In a 2000 article in the Spokane Spokesman, republished by the <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/culteducation.com\/information\/8275-cult-remnant-still-believes-22-years-later-.html\">Cult Education Institute<\/a>, it was reported that she was\u00a0<a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/?v=469264417667748\">living with her uncle in Aurora<\/a>, a suburb of Denver, and couldn&#8217;t remember much of what happened in 1978.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8220;&#8216;It&#8217;s all hazy,&#8217; she said from her wheelchair&#8230; Her speech is halting and she seems frustrated that she can&#8217;t speak more quickly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;&#8221;It&#8217;s something I want to shove out,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I want my family back.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;She does paint-by-number art and likes coffee and listening to Neil Diamond. She said she likes to go outdoors, but gets out only about twice a week &#8220;if somebody takes me.&#8221;&#8216;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mol-para-with-font mol-style-subhead\">Andrea Yates<\/h2>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">In 2001, news stations around the country broadcasted the chilling news that a 36-year-old mother had drowned her five children in their family bathtub in Houston, <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/texas\/index.html\" id=\"mol-555d6120-8bd6-11ef-bb90-5511238cd93e\" rel=\"noopener\">Texas<\/a>, writes Woomer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018<a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-11727083\/Andrea-Yates-husband-says-paralyzed-midwife-mom-post-partum-shouldnt-prosecuted.html\" rel=\"noopener\">Andrea Yates<\/a> struggled against violent delusions surrounding her children. And when she did, she often didn\u2019t even enter the house.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Another nurse, charged with monitoring her colleague\u2019s work, also failed Makayla.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">In March 2011, Angela dialled 911, telling the operator that Makayla was in distress and struggling to breathe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018Paramedics quickly whisked Makayla to Dayton Children\u2019s Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 10.30pm, just a few minutes after arriving.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018The death of a child is a tragedy no matter their age.
