least two people have died and hundreds have been rescued in Roswell, New Mexico, according to the New Mexico State Police,<strong> <\/strong>after extreme overnight rainfall brought severe flooding, stranding motorists and sweeping away cars.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2hx8p9q000l3b6mwuv32z0a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The New Mexico National Guard and other agencies have rescued at least 290 people, including 38 who were taken to hospitals, the agency confirmed in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/NewMexicoNationalGuard\/posts\/pfbid0dA7zH4CuFYATp13uqxG9nHy3CdL2WFHWvqCrV8swUb9C6D6P3fbxEhtcwt2FWagl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2i5kacv00003b6m5ubiq7h9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            No details have been released about the confirmed fatalities. \u201cCrews are still out there and rescue efforts are still underway,\u201d New Mexico State Police Officer Amanda Richards told CNN Sunday afternoon.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2hx98s0000w3b6mpaf4uy9i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The National Weather Service declared an overnight flash flood emergency for Roswell and nearby areas, as emergency management within Chaves County reported numerous water rescues.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2hxgihf001c3b6mbpr6or0m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The weather service also <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NWSAlbuquerque\/status\/1847983628589896058\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">warned<\/a> widespread showers and storms are expected again on Sunday in central and eastern New Mexico and will bring the risk of large hail, damaging wind gusts, tornadoes, and data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Roswell recorded 5.78\u201d of rainfall Saturday, which set a record for any date, surpassing the prior mark of 5.65\u201d set November 1, 1901, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NWSAlbuquerque\/status\/1847937046926471537\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Weather Service<\/a>. It also broke the daily record set in 1983 and is four times the region\u2019s average October rainfall.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2hx98s0000y3b6meuueeaya@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Spring River in the Cahoon area rose to dangerous levels, stranding several vehicles under bridges along the river, with water entering homes in the area. Water levels have since receded in some areas, but remain high in downtown Roswell and throughout town along the Spring River channel, according to the city.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2hx3rjz00003b6mb9tqdd7g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cMany motorists became stranded when their vehicles got stuck in flood waters on many streets,\u201d the City of Roswell said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/RoswellNMGovernment\/posts\/pfbid02CHBDoxCf7Pd5etMydekVkbVwmBGFVFSJh5WJ42xAFLFReZAUyCy4wQbMjf6PJBV5l\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>. \u201cSome people had to await rescue on top of their vehicles that were covered by water. Some vehicles were swept by the water into the river channel. One fatality has been confirmed as a result of the flooding. Search-and-rescue efforts are still underway this morning.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2hxj60t001g3b6mnshjkwkq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Videos posted by Chaves County Sheriff Mike Herrington <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/chavescountysheriffnm\/videos\/891874972560029\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">show him standing on top of his vehicle<\/a> on Sunday around midnight, surrounded by floodwaters that swept his car away along with other stranded vehicles. People\u2019s houses and cars flooded, Herrington says in the videos, which also show floodwater rescues.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2hx8pno000p3b6my17s2hxv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe feel for the New Mexicans affected by this latest flooding in our state,\u201d said Maj. Gen. Miguel Aguilar, the New Mexico National Guard\u2019s adjutant general. \u201cBecause of the previous flooding in Ruidoso, we have the experience and were ready for this. That\u2019s why we\u2019re asking everybody to please stay home,\u201d Yslas said in the video. \u201cIt\u2019s not worth your life to try to take pictures.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2i7mn7i00063b6mug3wksf4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He explained the force of the water is \u201ctremendous,\u201d evidenced by a camper seen in the video in the middle of a field off the roadway.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2i22ths00003b6mujgkrffc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Roswell Air Center, an airport near the city, is closed and flights were canceled for Sunday and Monday because of the storm, flooding and debris, officials <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/RoswellNMGovernment\/posts\/pfbid036CKQVukg7mnvhXZibAQFJWyNzgo1ZrZfTPe99ymQZ1uHjgPEG8ttaxJdRxrhxcq8l\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced on Facebook<\/a>. \u201cAn assessment will be done Monday morning to determine if flights can resume by the afternoon,\u201d the post read.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2i241wi00053b6mmeimj35z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The ordeal has also led to the closure of other city facilities such as the Recreation and Aquatic Center, the Spring River Zoo, the public library, the local museum, the convention center, a golf course and a cemetery until further notice.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2i241wi00063b6m4t4yqj6g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            City officials <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/RoswellNMGovernment\/posts\/pfbid02chQyTPF83qtMHZGVxeUBugANjxmKFZ3pejeYB3NERoF53mFRi4aszo9567YM5au1l\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">asked residents<\/a> to stay off the streets as response efforts continue and some areas remain dangerous.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2i5zm0e000m3b6mwnw5dh22@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A shelter is available to Roswell residents who are affected by the flooding and need to evacuate.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2i60i59000p3b6m6hgi9woo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Roadways into Roswell are shut down. Residents may leave but will not be able to reenter, Richards said.
