However, it&#8217;s still uncertain whether the nucleus will survive the encounter with the sun.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnly if the nucleus survives past that point will there be any sort of display worth mentioning,\u201d said astronomer Dr. Qicheng Zhang at Flagstaff, Arizona&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/lowell.edu\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/lowell.edu\/\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/lowell.edu\/\" aria-label=\"Lowell Observatory\">Lowell Observatory<\/a>, who has been monitoring the comet. \u201cIn other words, it&#8217;s almost a binary all-or-nothing event.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"embed-base color-body color-body-border link-embed embed-6\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jamiecartereurope\/2024\/10\/20\/comet-tracker-for-sunday-when-and-where-to-see-it-tonight\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Comet Tracker Tonight: Sunday May Be Your Good Last Chance To See A3\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"forbesEmbedly:https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jamiecartereurope\/2024\/10\/20\/comet-tracker-for-sunday-when-and-where-to-see-it-tonight\/\"><span class=\"link-embed__info\"><span class=\"link-embed__provider\">Forbes<\/span><span class=\"link-embed__title\">Comet Tracker Tonight: Sunday May Be Your Good Last Chance To See A3<\/span><small class=\"link-embed__byline\">By <span class=\"link-embed__author\">Jamie Carter<\/span><\/small><\/span><span class=\"link-embed__thumbnail-wrapper\"><span class=\"link-embed__thumbnail allow-inline-style\" style=\"background-image: url(https:\/\/specials-images.forbesimg.com\/imageserve\/670a6b1225731cb8ac4a0bd0\/960x0.jpg?cropX1=0&amp;cropX2=1368&amp;cropY1=0&amp;cropY2=768);\"\/><\/span><\/a><fbs-ad position=\"inread\" progressive=\"\" ad-id=\"article-0-inread\" aria-hidden=\"true\" role=\"presentation\"\/><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subhead-embed color-accent bg-base font-accent font-size text-align\">When To See The \u2018Halloween Comet\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve been observing C\/2024 S1 fragmenting in the last couple of weeks,\u201d said Zhang. \u201cThe fragmentation process seems to still be ongoing, meaning the comet has not yet fully disintegrated.\u201d However, it&#8217;s too early to completely write off comet S1. &#8220;It&#8217;s still not clear, however, if what&#8217;s left the left of the nucleus is enough to survive the encounter with the sun,&#8221; said Zhang.<\/p>\n<p>That won&#8217;t bother observers in the Southern Hemisphere. Comet S1 will make its closest approach to Earth on Wednesday, Oct. 23. In the days after, from Thursday, Oct. 24 to Monday, Oct. 28, it could dramatically brighten and become visible to the naked eye, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/starwalk.space\/en\/news\/new-kreutz-sungrazer-comet-atlas-2024\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/starwalk.space\/en\/news\/new-kreutz-sungrazer-comet-atlas-2024\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/starwalk.space\/en\/news\/new-kreutz-sungrazer-comet-atlas-2024\" aria-label=\"StarWalk\">StarWalk<\/a>. It will be best seen just before sunrise as it gets closer to the sun each morning.<\/p>\n<p>It will make its <em>perihelion<\/em> with the sun \u2014 the closest it will get to our star \u2014 on Monday, Oct. 28, and in theory, then be visible from the Northern Hemisphere after sunset from Tuesday, Oct. 29 through December.<\/p>\n<p>It could theoretically reach a brightness of magnitude -8.3. That\u2019s brighter even than Venus, the brightest object in the sky aside from the sun and moon, so comet S1 could be visible in daylight.<\/p>\n<p>But there\u2019s a problem.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subhead-embed color-accent bg-base font-accent font-size text-align\"><strong>What Could Happen To The \u2018Halloween Comet\u2019 <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Only discovered on Sept. 27 by astronomers at the ATLAS survey in Hawaii, comet S3 is likely a Kreutz sungrazer comet, which means it will get much closer to the sun than most comets \u2014 within around 1,500,000 kilometers (900,000 miles), according to astronomer Graham Jones at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeanddate.com\/news\/astronomy\/comet-c-2024-s1-atlas\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.timeanddate.com\/news\/astronomy\/comet-c-2024-s1-atlas\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.timeanddate.com\/news\/astronomy\/comet-c-2024-s1-atlas\" aria-label=\"Timeanddate.com\">Timeanddate.com<\/a>. \u201cComets are notorious for being highly unpredictable, and the latest indications are discouraging,\u201d writes Jones.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"embed-base color-body color-body-border link-embed embed-4\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jamiecartereurope\/2024\/10\/18\/seen-the-comet-now-see-halleys-comets-shooting-star-show---heres-when\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Seen The Comet? Now See It With \u2018Shooting Stars\u2019 From Halley\u2019s Comet<\/span><small class=\"link-embed__byline\">By <span class=\"link-embed__author\">Jamie Carter<\/span><\/small><\/span><span class=\"link-embed__thumbnail-wrapper\"><span class=\"link-embed__thumbnail allow-inline-style\" style=\"background-image: url(https:\/\/specials-images.forbesimg.com\/imageserve\/dv028265\/960x0.jpg);\"\/><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subhead-embed color-accent bg-base font-accent font-size text-align\"><strong>Best And Worst Case ScenarioS For Comet S1<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Kreutz sungrazer comets can be the best and brightest comets of all \u2014 if they survive. \u201cThe best case scenario for it is it could produce a very long but also very tenuous tail that emerges into the morning sky in early November,\u201d said Zhang, who thinks it could resemble 2011&#8217;s bright comet C\/2011 W3 (Lovejoy), also a Kreutz sungrazer. \u201cIt probably can&#8217;t get too much brighter than that given what we see of it now, but C\/2024 S1 would at least be visible from the Northern Hemisphere if it does do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The worst case for comet-watchers is that comet S1 falls apart before its close encounter with the sun this week. \u201cThat would result in virtually nothing being visible afterward in November,\u201d said Zhang, adding that in that scenario, it probably won&#8217;t be anything impressive to look at in October while it&#8217;s close to the sun.<\/p>\n<p>Astronomers should know more about the probable fate of comet S1 in the coming days.
