At the St. James Theatre, 246 West 44th Street.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>But age is just a number \u2014 right, Norma? \u201cSunset Boulevard,\u201d which opened Sunday night at the St. James Theatre, is Broadway\u2019s most exhilarating show in years.<\/p>\n<p>So much energy, freshness and unrelenting intensity courses through the veins of director <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/10\/19\/nicole-scherzinger-stars-in-a-seismic-london-sunset-boulevard\/\">Jamie Lloyd\u2019s startling production<\/a> of Andrew Lloyd Webber\u2019s musical from beginning to end, you\u2019d swear it was brand new.<\/p>\n<p>And adrenaline pumps through our bloodstream anytime the extraordinary Nicole Scherzinger, making her wondrous Broadway debut, wails a note.<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019s otherworldly as that reclusive has-been Norma. A revelation. And when the former Pussycat Doll belts Lloyd Webber\u2019s stirring ballads, \u201cWith One Look\u201d and \u201cAs If We Never Said Goodbye,\u201d as haze dreamily swirls behind her, the audience all but levitates.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter\">\n<div class=\"inline-module inline-module--more inline-module--more inline-module--columnist inline-module--more--thirds\">\n<div class=\"inline-module__inner\">\n<h2 class=\"inline-module__heading subsection-heading subsection-heading--single-line \">\n\t\t\tMore From\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"subsection-heading__sub\">Johnny Oleksinski<\/span><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/h2>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>The entire production leaves you breathless. We\u2019re transfixed from the moment the giant video screen \u2014 this staging\u2019s chandelier \u2014 descends from the rafters bearing the image of actor Tom Francis\u2019 dangerous eyes as struggling screenwriter Joe Gillis drives toward his doom.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Tom Francis plays Joe Gillis in the Broadway revival of \u201cSunset Boulevard.\u201d  <span class=\"credit\">Marc Brenner<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>From then on, Joe and the ticket-buyers out there in the dark are sucked into Norma\u2019s delusional fantasy \u2014 that she still is the greatest star of all; that she\u2019ll make her long-awaited return; that her whole sad life is one big movie.<\/p>\n<p>A damn entertaining one, at that.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone who\u2019s watched Billy Wilder\u2019s 1950 classic starring Gloria Swanson, or saw the show on Broadway in the 1990s and 2017 with Glenn Close, might worry that their glasses prescription is out of date. Lloyd\u2019s production is unrecognizable.<\/p>\n<p>Call it \u201cNo-Set Boulevard.\u201d The director has tossed out the grand mansion with its endless staircase and left just a couple of chairs. There\u2019s no 1930s Hollywood lots and sound stages. Scherzinger wears a silky black dress (costumes by\u00a0Soutra Gilmour) instead of a turban and form-concealing shawl.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Nicole Scherzinger stuns as Norma Desmond. <span class=\"credit\">Marc Brenner<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A few filler songs, like \u201cThe Lady\u2019s Paying,\u201d have been cut. Good! And anachronistic dances \u2014 a la \u201cThe Robot\u201d \u2014 have been added. Norma, desperate to be half her age, sometimes speaks like she\u2019s filming an Instagram reel.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A sensual dancer, Young Norma (Hannah Yun Chamberlain), tickles and tortures Norma with memories of her glory days. Choreographer Fabian Aloise\u2019s movement ranges from alluring to chaotic.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a lot. But some way, somehow, it all works magnificently.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>A giant screen is another character altogether in Jamie Lloyd\u2019s production. <span class=\"credit\">Marc Brenner<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>That\u2019s because the tragic tale of fame\u2019s road to ruin is as true and relevant as ever. As Joe bitingly observes: \u201cThe world is full of Joes and Normas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At first, frustrated Joe is just a writer who can\u2019t land a job, until one day when he\u2019s chased by thugs down Sunset and stumbles into the mansion of Norma Desmond \u2014 a kooky silent film star who has been forgotten with the advent of the talkies.<\/p>\n<p>She hires Joe to spruce up her awful screenplay \u201cSalome,\u201d which she plans to be her Hollywood comeback. With no other option, he moves into the cavernous house, lorded over by her Lurch-like butler Max (David Thaxton), and together Norma and Joe careen toward disaster. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Lloyd\u2019s, by the way, is the first production of \u201cSunset Boulevard\u201d I\u2019ve seen in which the scenes involving Joe, Betty Schaefer (a strong Grace Hodgett Young), the third party in a messed-up love triangle, Artie (Diego Andres Rodriguez) and their LA writer friends are more than just boring water breaks for the actress playing Norma.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Hannah Yun Chamberlain, right, plays Young Norma, who tortures and delights Norma with memories of her glory days. <span class=\"credit\">Marc Brenner<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The cinematic closeups on their expressive faces as they fall in and out of love, set to Lloyd Webber\u2019s sweeping score, adds real meat to sections that can easily sag.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, lighting designer Jack Knowles uses shadows and stark brightness to amp up the drama with haunting images straight out of a silent film.<\/p>\n<p>Francis, smoldering and velvet-voiced in his Broadway debut, walks away with the musical\u2019s biggest talker at the top of Act 2.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A feat involving video cameras, fresh air and a mountain of logistics, it\u2019s thrilling, tremendous fun \u2026 and will infuriate some people. It wouldn\u2019t be Broadway, after all, if somebody wasn\u2019t whining about videos.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Scherzinger is titanic in the part. <span class=\"credit\">Marc Brenner<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But the show belongs to the titanic Scherzinger, who makes an especially proud and feral Norma. Her confidence and burning desire to succeed makes her fall much greater than that of a dusty hermit.<\/p>\n<p>It occurred to me, while watching her fluid arms as she sang \u201cAs If We Never Said Goodbye,\u201d that the actress was channelling Michael Crawford\u2019s ghoulish, lovesick Phantom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Phantom of the Opera,\u201d of course, played right across the street at the Majestic Theatre for 35 years until it closed last spring.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Now, Lloyd Webber\u2019s back on 44th Street with a bona fide new stage star,\u00a0and it seems fitting.
