He was 107.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Buu Nygren, president of the Navajo Nation, announced Mr. Kinsel\u2019s death in a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo\/?fbid=1097522379041379&amp;set=a.424256173034673\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">post<\/a> on social media. No cause was given.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">An estimated 400 Navajo Code Talkers served during World War II, transmitting a code crafted from the Navajo language that U.S. forces used to confuse the Japanese and communicate troop movements, enemy positions and other critical battlefield information. Mr. Kinsel, who served from October 1942 to January 1946, was part of the second group of Marines trained as code talkers at Camp Elliott in California, after the original 29 who developed the code for wartime use.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The code was never broken. A fictionalized version of the codetalkers\u2019 story was depicted in the film <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2002\/06\/15\/movies\/when-navajos-fought-japanese-for-ne-he-mah.html\" title=\"\">\u201cWindtalkers,\u201d<\/a> directed by John Woo.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.azcentral.com\/story\/news\/local\/arizona\/2019\/08\/29\/navajo-code-talker-john-kinsel-sr-ww-2\/1958740001\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">an interview in 2019 with The Arizona Republic,<\/a> Mr. Kinsel remembered training alongside 25 other marines at Camp Elliott, and he recalled working with some of the original 29 to develop additional code, including by working on code words for military words like \u201ctank\u201d and \u201caircraft.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Kinsel was assigned to the Ninth Marine Regiment, Third Marine Division, and took part in the battles of Bougainville (in Papau New Guinea), Guam and Iwo Jima.
