It is rising by about one percent a year in women and three percent in men<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Research shows that more than 80 percent of men and women practice oral sex, and surveys suggest that those rates are <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10581427\/#:~:text=Results,%25%E2%80%9328.7%25)%20remained%20stable.\">rising particarly among women<\/a>, from 85 percent reporting oral sex from 2011 to 2013 to 89 percent from 2017 to 2019.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">A majority of throat cancers &#8211; around 70 percent &#8211; are caused by\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">human papillomavirus (<\/span><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/hpv\/index.html\" id=\"mol-bcd3ef70-8fc5-11ef-badc-b3fef6a9968d\" style=\"font-weight: bold;\" rel=\"noopener\">HPV<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">), an umbrella of common sexually transmitted viruses which generally don&#8217;t cause symptoms and resolve on their own.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">There is a highly effective vaccine for HPV, but rates are considerably lower than the 85 percent needed to reach &#8216;herd immunity&#8217;, the term that means enough people have been made immune so that the virus cannot spread.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Less than 60 percent of school children have received the HPV vaccine for various reasons including parental hesitancy and anti-vax sentiment.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">HPV strain 16 is strongly linked to mouth and throat cancers. In recent years, the incidence of these HPV-related cancers has risen significantly, largely due to shifts in sexual behaviors, including the more frequent practice of oral sex, according to <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.henryford.com\/blog\/2024\/07\/why-are-oral-cancer-rates-rising#:~:text=HPV%3A%20The%20HPV%20strain%20HPV16,increased%20frequency%20of%20oral%20sex.\">Henry Ford Health<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Dr\u00a0Mehanna called on parents around the world to get their childrens vaccinated, as the shots are highly effective.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">He said the vaccines work &#8216;only if coverage among girls is high \u2013 over 85 percent, &#8216;and only if one remains within the covered &#8220;herd&#8221;.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;It certainly does not afford protection in countries where vaccine coverage of girls is low, for example, the US where only 54.3 percent of adolescents aged 13 to 15 years had received two or three HPV vaccination doses in 2020.&#8217;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">He added that he coronavirus pandemic has introduced additional difficulties.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">For one, schools were inaccessible for a time, making it harder to reach young people. But people with some kind of flaw in their immunity are more likely to develop genital or mouth warts or cancers of the cervix and genitals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">A vaccine against HPV was introduced in 2006 for children as young as 11, though initially for girls.
