The vote appeared to raise questions about the extent of popular support for policies, such as joining <a href=\"https:\/\/interfax.com\/newsroom\/top-stories\/103913\/\">many of the Western sanctions<\/a> against Moscow over its 2022 invasion of Ukraine, that have earned Moldova plaudits in the West but stoked tensions with the Kremlin.<\/p>\n<aside id=\"ad-backstage-wrap\" --><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"edTag\">Moldova voted for president, too<\/h3>\n<p>Moldova also held a presidential election Sunday, which also failed to bring the resounding win leaders hoped for. President Maia Sandu <a href=\"https:\/\/pv.cec.md\/cec-template-presidential-results.html\">led all challengers<\/a> but came out with 42.45%, falling short of what she needed for a first-round victory.<\/p>\n<p>Sandu now faces a runoff on Nov. 3 against Socialist Party candidate Alexandr Stoianoglo, a former prosecutor who boycotted the EU referendum and suggested Moldova would be better off seeking smoother relations with Russia.<\/p>\n<p><!-- END ID=\"RESNX-S1-5159997-102\" CLASS=\"BUCKETWRAP INTERNALLINK MEDIAPROMO PRIMARY\" --><\/p>\n<p>Sandu\u2019s political fortunes may rest on how many other opposition candidates \u2014 there were 10 in the race initially \u2014 choose to consolidate around Stoianoglo in the coming days.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, Sandu claimed victory but said there had been \u201can unprecedented assault\u201d on Moldovan democracy that distorted the outcome.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe people of Moldova have spoken: our EU future will now be anchored in the constitution. Instead, Rust says, the comments were all casting doubt on the EU or denigrating President Sandu.<\/p>\n<aside id=\"ad-secondary-wrap\" class=\"ad-wrap secondary\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Kremlin has vehemently denied interfering in the elections, and suggested European <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ac_24_5228\">promises to bring new investments<\/a> were more direct attempts to sway the vote.<\/p>\n<p>Reacting to the results published Monday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov suggested a late surge in pro-EU ballots had also \u201craised questions\u201d about the referendum\u2019s integrity.<\/p>\n<p>Outside the Moldovan Embassy in Moscow Sunday, long lines snaked around the block as thousands of citizens abroad turned out to cast ballots at the city\u2019s two lone polling stations.<\/p>\n<p>Most campaigned openly against the EU vote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have no future in Europe,\u201d said Lyubov Kuzmina, an entrepreneur who said she sent remittances home to relatives in Moldova. \u201cJust look at the price of gas. Today Moldova buys it from Europe at three times the price\u201d compared to Russia, she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone perfectly well understands that the European Union has no intention of accepting Moldova,\u201d added Tatiana Tsurka, a recent university graduate. She said she moved to Russia for economic reasons but hoped to one day return home to Moldova, which is one of the poorest countries in Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Still, others suggested that the referendum \u2014 and Kremlin pressure to oppose it \u2014 amounted to Moldova being force-fed a choice many would rather avoid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wouldn\u2019t want our vote for closer relations with Russia would mean the West is no longer of interest to us,\u201d says Anatoly Popenko, a Moldovan who runs a construction business in Moscow. \u201cThat\u2019s just dumb.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>Charles Maynes reported from Moscow.
