The Beaverton-based chain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kgw.com\/article\/news\/investigations\/sharis-cafe-pies-restaurant-financial-bills-taxes-eviction\/283-09ffded1-4261-48ba-8b14-b675904d4e06\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">faced mounting financial problems<\/a>, including eviction notices, unpaid bills and back taxes.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>\u201cI can confirm that at this time that all Oregon Shari&#8217;s restaurants are closed,\u201d Sam Borgese, CEO of Gather Holdings LLC, parent company of Shari\u2019s Management Corporation, wrote to the Oregon Lottery in an October 21 email obtained through a public records request.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>Shari\u2019s generated $34.7 million in video lottery sales in 2023, according to state records.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>As KGW first reported in August, the beloved chain of family style restaurants faced mounting debt for unpaid rent, taxes and other bills.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p><strong class=\"cms__embed-related-story\">READ MORE: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kgw.com\/article\/news\/investigations\/sharis-cafe-pies-restaurant-financial-bills-taxes-eviction\/283-09ffded1-4261-48ba-8b14-b675904d4e06\" class=\"cms__embed-related-story__link\">Shari\u2019s Restaurants faces financial problems: Unpaid bills, taxes, eviction notices<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>Nearly a dozen Shari\u2019s restaurants in Oregon, Idaho and Washington have quietly closed over the past six months.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve been in hospice for months, and it was just dragged out to the very end,\u201d said Deb Melina, who managed the Shari\u2019s restaurant on Northeast Airport Way in Portland.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>Melina said it was clear bills weren\u2019t being paid. Trash piled up behind the restaurant after garbage service stopped. In the past month, Melina said food supplies were no longer being delivered on a regular basis.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>\u201cHow do you open a restaurant when you have no eggs, no hash browns, no bacon, no ham?\u201d asked Melina.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>The store manager and other employees, desperate for basic ingredients, went to the grocery store so the restaurant could stay open, Melina explained.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>\u201cWe did what we had to do,\u201d said Melina.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>Shari\u2019s first opened in Hermiston in 1978. The family-style restaurant chain had more than 60 locations across Oregon, Washington, California, Idaho and Wyoming, according to the company\u2019s website. The hexagonal or six-sided restaurants were known for their award-winning pies and late-night meals.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>It\u2019s not clear if any Shari\u2019s restaurants remain open outside of Oregon.
