But this seemingly simple animal hid an exciting discovery: the unique &#8220;backward question mark&#8221;-shaped protrusion on its back is the first recorded example of an asymmetrical body pattern, a vital step in the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/474-controversy-evolution-works.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/474-controversy-evolution-works.html\"><u>evolution<\/u><\/a> of complex life.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"hawk-nest\" data-block-type=\"embed\" data-render-type=\"fte\" data-skip=\"dealsy\" data-widget-type=\"seasonal\"\/>\n<p>The fossils were discovered in South Australia&#8217;s Nilpena Ediacara National Park, a fossil deposit that has been excavated for decades. Many of the earliest complex animal fossils have been found in the remote desert hills of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.academia.edu\/9820499\/Lee_M_S_Y_2005_A_new_age_begins_Nature_Australia_28_5_9_10\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.academia.edu\/9820499\/Lee_M_S_Y_2005_A_new_age_begins_Nature_Australia_28_5_9_10\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>Nilpena Ediacara National Park<\/u><\/a>, but nothing like<em> Quaestio<\/em> had ever been seen before, the new study&#8217;s researchers said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The animal is a little smaller than the size of your palm and has a question-mark shape in the middle of its body that distinguishes between the left and right side,&#8221; <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/eoascollections.create.fsu.edu\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/eoascollections.create.fsu.edu\/about\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>Scott Evans<\/u><\/a>, a paleobiologist at Florida State University and first author of the study, said in a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/news.fsu.edu\/news\/university-news\/2024\/10\/14\/florida-state-university-scientist-discovers-one-of-the-earths-earliest-animals-in-australian-outback\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/news.fsu.edu\/news\/university-news\/2024\/10\/14\/florida-state-university-scientist-discovers-one-of-the-earths-earliest-animals-in-australian-outback\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>statement<\/u><\/a>. &#8220;There aren\u2019t other fossils from this time that have shown this type of organization so definitively.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: <\/strong><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/oldest-3d-green-algae-fossil\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/oldest-3d-green-algae-fossil\"><u><strong>Plants evolved even earlier than we thought, exquisite 3D fossils suggest<\/strong><\/u><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Quaestio<\/em>&#8216;s asymmetry would have been a groundbreaking evolutionary trait during the Ediacaran period (635 million to 541 million years ago), long <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/64977-rethinking-cambrian-explosion.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/64977-rethinking-cambrian-explosion.html\"><u>before the Cambrian explosion<\/u><\/a>. According to a 2016 issue of the journal <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/royalsocietypublishing.org\/doi\/10.1098\/rstb.2015.0399\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/royalsocietypublishing.org\/doi\/10.1098\/rstb.2015.0399\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B<\/u><\/a>, the ability for an organism to consistently produce an asymmetrical body pattern is a &#8220;remarkable phenomenon,&#8221; allowing life to evolve more complex body parts than a purely symmetrical body pattern will allow.
