Here\u2019s what we know"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-editable=\"content\" itemprop=\"articleBody\" data-reorderable=\"content\">\n<p>\n    <cite class=\"source__cite\"><br \/>\n      <span class=\"source__location\" data-editable=\"location\"\/><br \/>\n      <span class=\"source__text\" data-editable=\"source\">CNN<\/span><br \/>\n        \u00a0\u2014\u00a0<br \/>\n    <\/cite>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2jx5p2x001d3b6mxpkftjiu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding a helicopter crash in Houston on Sunday evening that killed four people on board and sparked a massive flame within sight of homes.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2jx6e6e001g3b6mdrkk0n7q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The<strong> <\/strong>privately owned Robinson R44 helicopter<strong> <\/strong>collided with a radio tower after taking off from Ellington Airport, about 17 miles south of the crash site.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2k8b3nk00003b6mi4b0covw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Investigators are now looking into whether malfunctioning lighting on the tower played a role in the crash, which toppled the structure.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2jwqll600053b6mxfws1npg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The ages and names of the pilot and three passengers killed have not been released, but officials confirmed one of the passengers was a child.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2jwqll600063b6mdqcjw90e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            On Monday, Brian Rutt, an air safety investigator with the National Transportation Safety Board, described the scene of the crash as \u201ccomplex\u201d and said the investigation is in its early stages.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2k20821000k2a6bukchangc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Here\u2019s what we know:\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2jwqll600093b6m7arelcak@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The helicopter was flying at an altitude of approximately 600 feet when it struck the 1,000-foot radio tower just before 8 p.m. Sunday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/10\/20\/us\/houston-helicopter-tower-crash\/index.html\">according to investigators and open-source data<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2jwqll6000a3b6m45h85akj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            No one on the ground was injured and nearby homes were undamaged, although some vehicles were affected, officials said. The crash ignited a fire that scorched approximately 100 to 200 yards of grass.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2jwqll6000c3b6myll0l1xp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The crash near Engelke Street and North Ennis Street, just east of downtown Houston, resulted in a significant explosion, Mayor John Whitmire said at a Sunday night news conference.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2jwqll6000b3b6mmusmk2b0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Firefighters from a nearby station who heard the crash quickly responded, Whitmire said. He described the scene as a \u201cterrible accident\u201d and noted that both the tower and the helicopter were destroyed. Some nearby residents experienced power outages, he added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2jzqlrb00042a6b0s861sug@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While watching a football game on Sunday night, Lawrence Gurule heard a noise he said \u201csounded like a bomb.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2jzqlrb00052a6bzij4idn0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI ran outside and looked up and I could see smoke. The tower was gone,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2jwqll6000e3b6me50tdb8w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The lighting on the radio tower is believed to have been malfunctioning for several days prior to the crash. The Federal Aviation Administration issued a notice Thursday indicating the tower\u2019s lights were deemed \u201cunserviceable\u201d until the end of the month.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2jwqll6000f3b6mznvcqyzh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            FAA guidelines state towers over 200 feet above ground level \u201cshould typically be marked and\/or lighted,\u201d and any outages in tower lighting \u201cshould be addressed as quickly as possible,\u201d as outlined in a 2020 publication.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2jwqll6000g3b6mpzjtsres@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Towers and their guy wires \u2013 which are used to stabilize a structure \u2013 present a particular danger to helicopters, which usually operate at low altitudes, and can be difficult for pilots to spot at night.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2k3rdpn000p2a6b8pafqoa9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Video footage of the crash shows at least one flashing light at the top of the tower, but the remainder of the structure appears unlit.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2jwqll6000i3b6mgii7zg9a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While the cause of the crash is unknown, the NTSB <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/10\/20\/us\/houston-helicopter-tower-crash\/index.html\">told CNN<\/a> additional investigators were set to arrive at the site Monday evening to examine and recover the aircraft.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2jwqll6000j3b6m0uxzem71@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The flight was identified as a \u201csightseeing\u201d tour, with the helicopter registered to Porter Equipment Holdings LLC, based in Magnolia, Texas, according to the FAA. CNN has reached out to the company for a response.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2jwqll6000k3b6mqbnvak69@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Law enforcement was searching for debris in the area Monday, and the Houston Police Department\u2019s vehicular crimes division was performing a three-dimensional scan over a 4-acre area to provide data to both the NTSB and FAA, Lt.
