But the easiest way to start is by just getting some steps in, according to Dr. Wendy Suzuki, a neuroscientist and professor at NYU.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Just 10 minutes of walking, that everybody anywhere could do, decreases your anxiety and depression levels,&#8221; Suzuki said during a recent appearance on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/annabel_spring_and_wendy_suzuki_what_makes_a_good_life_a_neuroscientist_and_a_global_financial_ceo_answer?user_email_address=fc4cf06485efefec12d9b7afcfa2fd6b&amp;lctg=65397b8f2ec498f10209a423&amp;subtitle=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TED Intersections<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Taking a short stroll can be the equivalent of giving yourself a &#8220;bubble bath of neurochemicals&#8221; like dopamine and serotonin, she explained.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/01\/11\/top-things-i-learned-from-walking-10000-steps-a-day.html\">Keeping up your daily walks<\/a> over the course of weeks, months and years can give &#8220;your brain not only good neurochemicals, but growth factors&#8221; that may improve its health, she said.<\/p>\n<p>And it&#8217;s never too late to start. Even if you were a &#8220;couch potato until you&#8217;re 75,&#8221; Suzuki<strong> <\/strong>said, consistent walks can still make your brain healthier.<\/p>\n<p>For several years, she focused on her career and neglected her body, she recounted. Only once she found herself feeling &#8220;so good&#8221; after a river rafting trip to Peru did she begin to research <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/09\/08\/6-exercises-to-keep-your-brain-active-and-reduce-the-risk-of-dementia.html\">the impacts of physical activity on the brain<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>People who engaged in regular physical activity, including walking, had a 17% lower chance of developing dementia than those who didn&#8217;t exercise often, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/35948447\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2022 systematic review<\/a> in the medical journal Neurology.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to challenge yourself, try<strong> <\/strong>to incorporate &#8220;forms of activity that require strategy [which]<strong> <\/strong>will work your prefrontal cortex more,&#8221; such as soccer or basketball,\u00a0Suzuki said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterclass.com\/series\/brain-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MasterClass about brain health<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, she said, she would prescribe physical activity to just about anyone, and she believes that the best form of exercise for you is the one that makes you the happiest. &#8220;Any time of day you can work out is the best time of day to work out, because our lives are so busy,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/07\/06\/neuroscientist-the-unique-exercise-i-do-for-optimal-brain-health.html\">Suzuki said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Want to earn more money at work?<\/strong> Take CNBC&#8217;s new online course <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/cnb.cx\/4h843Gq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><strong>How to Negotiate a Higher Salary<\/strong><\/em><\/a><em>.
