He was 68.<\/p>\n<p>Newman passed away 18 years after he was diagnosed with Parkinson\u2019s disease.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Michael Newman. <span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The news <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/baywatch-lifeguard-michael-newman-dies-age-68-parkinsons-disease-diagnosis-8731887\">was confirmed<\/a> Tuesday by Newman\u2019s close friend, Matt Felker, who recently directed the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/08\/29\/entertainment\/why-pamela-anderson-isnt-in-the-new-baywatch-documentary\/\">Hulu docuseries about \u201cBaywatch.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The late actor died \u201cfrom heart complications\u201d on Sunday evening \u201csurrounded by his family and friends.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Michael Newman. <span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cI got to see Mike the last time he was conscious and he looked [at] me and in typical Mike fashion said, \u2018You\u2019re just in time,&#8217;\u201d Felker told PEOPLE.<\/p>\n<p>Newman was the only \u201cBaywatch\u201d cast member who was a real-life lifeguard. He appeared on 150 episodes of the show, the most of anyone except David Hasselhoff. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The cast of \u201cBaywatch\u201d <span class=\"credit\">Everett\/Shutterstock<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The actor was also a full-time firefighter while starring on \u201cBaywatch.\u201d He returned to firefighting after the show ended in 2001 until he retired after 25 years.<\/p>\n<p>Newman was 50 when he was diagnosed with Parkinson\u2019s in 2006.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Michael Newman at the \u201cAfter Baywatch: Moment in the Sun\u201d premiere in August. <span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>His life with the disease was highlighted in \u201cAfter Baywatch: Moment in the Sun,\u201d which explored the cast\u2019s life after being on the beloved show.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis terminal disease has allowed me a lot of thinking time, which I maybe didn\u2019t want, but it\u2019s brought me wisdom,\u201d Newman told <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/baywatch-lifeguard-michael-newman-says-parkinsons-brought-him-wisdom-exclusive-8701976\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PEOPLE<\/a> in August.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy body has changed so slowly that I hardly notice it, yet I am constantly reminded that Parkinson\u2019s has now become the center of my life,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Michael Newman, Parker Stevenson at the \u201cAfter Baywatch: Moment in the Sun\u201d premiere. <span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI am cherishing the days that I get to be on this earth with family and friends,\u201d he went on. \u201cI\u2019m taking life seriously.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>He shared that the words he lives by are, \u201cIt\u2019s not a run-through.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the docuseries, Newman revealed that he took 10 medications a day while battling Parkinson\u2019s.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The premiere of \u201cAfter Baywatch: Moment in the Sun\u201d in Santa Monica, Calif. <span class=\"credit\">Richard Shotwell\/Invision\/AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Last year, Newman explained why he retired from Hollywood despite taking \u201cgreat pleasure\u201d in acting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t realize how hard it is to look natural in front of the lens and watch yourself improve and, sometimes,\u00a0<em>not<\/em>\u00a0improve,\u201d he told <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/why-baywatch-lifeguard-mike-newman-quit-acting-exclusive-8302931\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PEOPLE at the time<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Donna D\u2019Errico, Michael Newman and Traci Bingham on \u201cBaywatch.\u201d <span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIf you didn\u2019t have to be there, why would you be?\u201d he added of the entertainment industry. \u201cLet\u2019s be honest \u2026 there\u2019s not too many actors that have survived the years of working in Hollywood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Newman spent the final years of his life raising money with the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/09\/20\/michael-j-fox-cruel-parkinsons-will-out-me-eventually\/\">Michael J.
