Like most people in my liberal social circle, my reaction to the movie\u2019s existence was essentially: why? Not in material \u2013 even if you\u2019re not the most well read on Trump prior to his presidential campaign in 2015, his public character has long been consistent \u2013 but in its straightforward approach to depict the life of the former president. Though predictably dismissed by Republican figures and Trump himself as a hack job (or more specifically, \u201ca cheap, defamatory and politically disgusting hatchet job, put out right before the 2024 Presidential Election, to try and hurt the Greatest Political Movement in the History of our Country\u201d, as Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/donald-trump-the-apprentice-reaction-fake-classless-1236031493\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">wrote on Truth Social<\/a>), The Apprentice is an overall sincere movie, attempting to depict a highly contentious figure as close to the emotional truth as possible, while remaining entertaining. As Sherman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2024\/oct\/05\/apprentice-trump-movie-ali-abbasi\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">told<\/a> me before its release: \u201cIt\u2019s such a universal story about the apprentice outstripping the master \u2026 I hope people can experience it on its own terms and not bring all their political baggage to it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">A nice sentiment, which meant, unfortunately, that it was never going to go down well with highly polarized American audiences. I remember thinking, as I watched Stan do as decent a job as possible at playing a man whose tics are known by tens of millions, as Strong effectively conveyed Cohn\u2019s lizardly stare and calm ruthlessness, that it wouldn\u2019t really matter how well The Apprentice delivered on its self-appointed mission to dig into the character of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/donaldtrump\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Donald Trump<\/a>. American audiences, most of whom are not keen to set aside political baggage this close to an election, wouldn\u2019t bite; this could only appeal to people outside the US, who either do not have to think about him every day or do not possess some native understanding of Trump\u2019s distinctly American celebrity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">To wit: the film, following a protracted and difficult distribution search that nearly killed the movie, made just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/release\/rl655458305\/weekend\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">$1.6m in 1,740 US theaters<\/a> during its opening weekend \u2013 a flop, particularly for a film with awards aspirations. Unsurprisingly, it found most of its viewers in large, urban liberal enclaves such as New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco and Washington DC. But The Apprentice has performed relatively well overseas \u2013 it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.screendaily.com\/news\/the-wild-robot-in-31m-debut-at-uk-ireland-box-office-the-apprentice-opens-third\/5198352.article\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">made $835,000<\/a> in its opening weekend in the UK, landing behind The Wild Robot and Smile 2 (the rule is usually to view it as representing a 10th of the US box office), and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/release\/rl655458305\/weekend\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">over $623,000<\/a> in 319 theaters in France.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"cdc45a52-6ba0-4be2-bba4-b22a6e21f22f\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.VideoYoutubeBlockElement\" class=\" dcr-173mewl\">\n<div data-component=\"youtube-embed\" class=\"dcr-13aa88h\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/0tXEN0WNJUg?wmode=opaque&amp;feature=oembed\" title=\"The Apprentice | Official Trailer | Exclusively in Theaters October 11\" height=\"480\" width=\"854\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">Part of the film\u2019s domestic box office woes owe to business issues outside the film-makers\u2019 control. After a splashy premiere and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/donald-trump-movie-the-apprentice-cannes-standing-ovation-1235904113\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">positive critical reception<\/a> at the Cannes film festival in May, The Apprentice <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-features\/the-apprentice-film-donald-trump-interview-1236026525\/#recipient_hashed=dc68e911e0e159ea2be7d14e75501937a661c79bb7cb043f0285328fc25396f1&amp;recipient_salt=5fb4e1319ff3fed437d5b8912f36fca61ad1c1a9c8cb1fc7b07a808ee9fed6f8&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=exacttarget&amp;utm_campaign=Breaking%20News&amp;utm_content=557202_10-09-2024&amp;utm_term=9339546\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">struggled to find distribution<\/a>, partly due to Trump\u2019s political influence and partly due to old-fashioned market timidity. Days after the premiere, reports emerged that the film\u2019s principal financier, Kinematics \u2013 founded by the son-in-law of billionaire Trump donor Dan Snyder \u2013 objected to a scene depicting Trump\u2019s alleged rape of his wife Ivana (Maria Bakalova). (The scene, as with everything in The Apprentice, is grounded in some historical record; Ivana recounted the event in a 1990 divorce deposition, under oath.) Simultaneously, Trump\u2019s legal team issued a cease and desist order, threatening to sue. The objections had their intended chilling effect \u2013 according to the film-makers, every major American distributor and streaming service passed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">The Apprentice has only reached theaters thanks to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-features\/the-apprentice-movie-kickstarter-1235991544\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Kickstarter campaign<\/a> (dubbed \u201cRelease the Apprentice\u201d), a last-minute buyout of Kinetics and an 11th-hour save by renegade indie outlet Briarcliff Entertainment. The Apprentice is overall well made and well acted, and generally earnest in vivifying the extensive reporting done on arguably the most famous living American. It is not <em>not<\/em> worth watching, as a film about a student gradually eclipsing his teacher in a bankrupt New York, and yet also not particularly insightful on its subject. Though to be fair, little is \u2013 despite Republicans\u2019 continued delusions of seriousness, Trump has been clearly who he is for a long, long time, and in the news on a daily basis for going on a decade. There is nothing to say that has not been said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">Still, I agree, rationally, with the film-makers\u2019 pleas to give it a chance, to resist corporate censorship, to see the film as a chance to critique, as Abbasi <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2024\/oct\/05\/apprentice-trump-movie-ali-abbasi\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">put it<\/a>, the \u201csocial Darwinism that is built-in in American society, that didn\u2019t come with Trump and will not end with Trump\u201d. To accept that, to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-features\/the-apprentice-film-donald-trump-interview-1236026525\/#recipient_hashed=dc68e911e0e159ea2be7d14e75501937a661c79bb7cb043f0285328fc25396f1&amp;recipient_salt=5fb4e1319ff3fed437d5b8912f36fca61ad1c1a9c8cb1fc7b07a808ee9fed6f8&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=exacttarget&amp;utm_campaign=Breaking%20News&amp;utm_content=557202_10-09-2024&amp;utm_term=9339546\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">paraphrase<\/a> executive producer James Shani, it may not teach you anything new, but will make you feel something different. (Discomfort, for one, or the limitations of one\u2019s pre-existing exhaustion.)
