Then the Archdiocese Intervened."},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-0\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Connelly Theater in New York\u2019s East Village has for years been a shabby but warm haven for adventurous performing arts: the play <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/07\/30\/theater\/job-review-broadway.html?ogrp=dpl&amp;smid=url-share\" title=\"\">\u201cJob,\u201d<\/a> which is now wrapping up a Broadway run; Kate Berlant\u2019s <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/09\/07\/theater\/kate-review.html?ogrp=dpl&amp;smid=url-share\" title=\"\">\u201cKate,\u201d<\/a> a one-woman show that went on to London and California after selling out downtown; and the satire <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/10\/20\/theater\/circle-jerk-review.html\" title=\"\">\u201cCircle Jerk,\u201d<\/a> a Pulitzer finalist in 2021.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But over the past few weeks, the building\u2019s landlord \u2014 the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York \u2014 began more intensely scrutinizing the content of shows whose producers were seeking to rent the space. At least three planned productions had to relocate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Josh Luxenberg, who has been the theater\u2019s general manager for the past decade, submitted his resignation late Friday. And early Tuesday, the Catholic school that is the intermediary between the theater and the archdiocese said it was \u201csuspending all operations of its theater.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Producers who have rented from the Connelly say they were aware that it was owned by the archdiocese, and that there was always a clause in their contract allowing the Roman Catholic Church to bar anything it deemed obscene, pornographic or detrimental to the church\u2019s reputation. But only recently, they said, did the archdiocese seek to rigorously scrutinize scripts before approving rentals.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">New York Theater Workshop said it was told by a bishop this month that it could not stage \u201cBecoming Eve,\u201d which is adapted from a memoir about a rabbi who comes out as a transgender woman, at the Connelly early next year.
