id=\"auto-tag_george-gascon\" data-tag=\"george-gascon\">George Gasc\u00f3n<\/a>\u00a0is clearly continuing to hope the Menendez brothers could shift his political fortunes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tWeeks after giving a press conference to say he was \u201creviewing\u201d newish evidence of the sexual abuse the brothers allegedly suffered from their father and amidst public pressure to shown leniency to Eric and Lyle Menendez, DA Gasc\u00f3n told <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/cnn\/\" id=\"auto-tag_cnn\" data-tag=\"cnn\">CNN<\/a> today that the case just might be taking a dramatic turn in the next few days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cThere\u2019s actually two different camps in my office,\u201d Gasc\u00f3n said to the cable newser\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/jake-tapper\/\" id=\"auto-tag_jake-tapper\" data-tag=\"jake-tapper\">Jake Tapper<\/a> Tuesday afternoon. \u201cI have a group of people, including some that were involved in the original trial, that are adamant that they should spend the rest of their life in prison and that they were not molested,\u201d the DA added. \u201cI have other people in the office that believe actually, that they probably were molested and that they deserve to have some relief.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cI plan to have a decision by the end of this week,\u201d Gasc\u00f3n declared.<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-content-image \/\/ DA was honest in admitting that \u201cthe public attention to this case\u201d with the success of <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/ryan-murphy\/\">Ryan Murphy<\/a>\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/netflix\/\">Netflix<\/a>\u00a0hit\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/monsters-the-lyle-and-erik-menendez-story\/\">Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story<\/a><\/em> and a series of documentaries on the brothers had certainly played a role in what he is clearly thinks could be a vote winner. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tIn an echo of what he told <em>People<\/em> magazine earlier this week, the first term DA\u2019s decision could see a recommendation to the courts for a resentencing for the siblings. If that occurs, a previously scheduled November 26 hearing may find the brothers\u2019 life sentence reduced or even the duo freed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tAfter the DA election, the hearing next month has been set on the petition by brothers Erik, 55, and Lyle, 56, that they were the subject of sexual abuse by their music industry exec father, as was at least one member of the boy band Menudo \u00a0Roy Rossell\u00f3. In a letter unearthed last year, Erik Menendez wrote in 1988 to one of his cousins months before the brother fatally shot their parents, of the extreme and repeated sexual abuse he was supposedly suffering from his music executive father Jose Menendez. In that context, which was white washed from the brothers second trial in 1996, the outcome of the hearing in late November and any self-declared \u201cfinal\u201d decision by Gasc\u00f3n, could see the brothers quickly released or go through a new trial 35 years after the shotgun murders of their parents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tDown double digits against ex-U.S. Assistant Attorney General Hochman, Gasc\u00f3n at his<a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2024\/10\/menendez-brothers-case-new-evidence-review-1236107048\/\"> October 3 press conference on the case<\/a>\u00a0that his divided office believed they had \u201ca moral and an ethical obligation to review what is being presented to us and make a determination based on a resentencing side, whether they deserve to be resentenced, even though they were clearly the murderers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe timing is incredibly suspicious,\u201d the Ted Sarandos-backed Hochman said in an October 8 candidate\u2019s debate to Gasc\u00f3n of the incumbent\u2019s sudden interest in the Menendez case\u201cYou certainly would not have me hold a press conference to tell you I\u2019m just thinking about it,\u201d  the rival added. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tYet, that contempt has deterred the DA from doubling down on the matter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2024\/10\/menendez-brothers-case-early-release-possible-1236117830\/\">As Deadline reported on October 16,<\/a> Gasc\u00f3n\u2019s told ABC News\u2019 October 17 debuting specia<em>l IMPACT x Nightline: Menendez Brothers: Monsters or Victims?<\/em> \u201c\u201cGiven the totality of the circumstances, I don\u2019t think they deserve to be in prison until they die.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThat same day last week, Gasc\u00f3n\u2019s office met with around two dozen members of the brothers\u2019 family and their lawyers after the relatives gave a press conference of their own in front of the outside the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center \u2013 the very building where both the brothers\u2019 two 1990s trials took place.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tToday on CNN, Tapper gave media savvy Gasc\u00f3n an invite \u201cto come on the show Friday to explain to us whatever decision you make.\u201d Wanna bet he takes Tapper up on that? <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<br \/><div data-type=\"_mgwidget\" data-widget-id=\"1660802\">\r\n<\/div>\r\n<script>(function(w,q){w[q]=w[q]||[];w[q].push([\"_mgc.load\"])})(window,\"_mgq\");\r\n<\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2024\/10\/menendez-brothers-resentencing-decision-murder-conviction-1236146441\/\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the middle of a bleak reelection campaign, Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gasc\u00f3n\u00a0is clearly continuing to hope the Menendez brothers could shift his political fortunes.
