Initial investigations have suggested that the slivered onions served on Quarter Pounders are a \u201clikely source of contamination,\u201d according to the C.D.C., which cited the Food and Drug Administration. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The onions are \u201cprimarily used on Quarter Pounder hamburgers and not other menu items.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">McDonald\u2019s said it would stop using the onions, and has halted sales of Quarter Pounders at restaurants in Colorado, Kansas, Utah, Wyoming, Idaho, Iowa, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico and Oklahoma.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Federal regulators are still investigating whether MacDonald\u2019s hamburger patties could also be a source of the illness.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In a statement posted to its website, McDonald\u2019s emphasized that other items on its menu, including cheeseburgers and hamburgers, are unaffected. \u201cServing customers safely in every single restaurant, each and every day, is our top priority and something we\u2019ll never compromise on,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Bill Marler, a personal-injury lawyer who focuses on food safety, said onions are notoriously difficult to grow cleanly and have been linked to other food-borne illnesses, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/10\/25\/business\/onions-salmonella-poisoning-please.html\" title=\"\">like salmonella<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">If onions really are to blame, he said, health officials will want to know whether the supplier exclusively provided them to McDonald\u2019s or if they were shipped elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">\u201c<\/strong>If these onions went to other places, you could start to see this thing expand pretty quickly,\u201d Mr. Marler said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The C.D.C. called the situation \u201ca fast-moving outbreak investigation.\u201d Most people fell ill with the bacterial infection between late September and mid-October, and all of those interviewed by health officials said they had recently eaten <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ecoli\/outbreaks\/when-people-got-sick-e-coli-o157-2024.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">at McDonald\u2019s<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Health investigators are also trying to determine whether any contaminated ingredients had been sold by other retailers or grocery stores.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The outbreak has hospitalized 10 people in the Mountain States, including a child who has a complicating illness, according to the C.D.C. One Colorado resident has died.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Symptoms of E. coli infection typically start four days after consuming a contaminated food and include diarrhea and severe stomach cramps. Medical help is required if those symptoms last longer than two days, or if the patient experiences a fever higher than 102 degrees or dehydration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In severe cases, E. coli may trigger <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ecoli\/signs-symptoms\/hus.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">kidney problems<\/a>, which can be life-threatening.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">McDonald\u2019s has been unusually in the news this week.
