Jacobson was employed by Jeffries and Smith to recruit, interview and hire men to perform commercial sex acts for Jeffries and Smith, according to the indictment.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2kp90wy000b3b6mcdsdxfgc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The indictment alleges that between December 2008 and March 2015,\u00a0Jeffries, Smith, and Jacobson engaged in a sex trafficking scheme in which they would recruit men engage in \u201csex events\u201d\u00a0at which\u00a0the alleged victims\u00a0were given muscle relaxants known as \u201cpoppers,\u201d alcohol, lubricant, Viagra, and condoms to perform sex acts. They were allegedly enticed into the acts with modeling and career opportunities at Abercrombie.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2kp6hff00043b6mj5tv1u0b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Jefferies stepped down as CEO of Abercrombie &amp; Fitch in December, 2014, having run the company since 1992. Jeffries and Smith made their initial appearances this afternoon in federal court in the Southern District of Florida. Jacobson was arrested in Wisconsin and made his initial appearance in federal court in St. Paul, Minnesota.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2kp9pri000f3b6m0ba5to3t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Jeffries was released on a $10 million bond, Jacobson was released on a $500,000 bond, and Smith was ordered to be detained. They will be arraigned in the Eastern District of New York on Friday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2kp9spu000h3b6msgo1jcit@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe will respond in detail to the allegations after the Indictment is unsealed, and when appropriate, but plan to do so in the courthouse \u2013 not the media,\u201d said Brian Bieber, attorney for Michael Jeffries. The attorney for Matthew Smith released the same statement for his client. An attorney for Jacobson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2kpwds2000k3b6maxwzt79f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Jacobson\u2019s alleged role was to travel the world to recruit and interview men for the \u201csex events\u201d\u00a0and conduct tryouts of potential candidates. Jacobson typically required that the candidates first engage in sex acts with him, according to the indictment.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2kq8g23000p3b6mwqqsfbed@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Jeffries and Smith hired a separate household staff to supervise these parties and directed the men to wear costumes, use sex toys or prepare for particular sex acts, prosecutors allege.\u00a0The staff would also act as security and controlled who entered and exited the \u201csex events,\u201d the indictment says,\u00a0and would not let them leave until Jeffries and Smith decided the events were over.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2kq8m4l000r3b6mcrjrolgr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The accused are alleged to have used a referral system and interview process for the sex\u00a0events, but didn\u2019t disclose details to the men\u00a0about\u00a0what they\u00a0would entail, including the full extent and nature of the sexual activity that would be required of them, according to the indictment, which included anal intercourse, and the use of sex toys and other objects.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2kq95qo000t3b6m41lup7ct@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The\u00a0accused\u00a0intentionally recruited heterosexual men, who\u00a0were also physically groomed prior to the sex parties, including shaving their genitals without advance notice. They were also told, according to the indictment, that not complying with certain requests for certain acts would harm their careers. The victims were allegedly required to sign non-disclosure agreements, prohibiting them from sharing any information about the sex events, including with their own family and friends.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2kqaacd000z3b6mhpcfmysa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Jeffries came under intense scrutiny in 2023 after a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/reel\/video\/p0ghz1rp\/models-make-sex-claims-against-ex-abercrombie-boss\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BBC investigation<\/a>\u00a0alleged the CEO and his partner Matthew Smith used a middleman to recruit and exploit young men. Dozens of men filed a lawsuit last year against Jeffries and Abercrombie &amp; Fitch, alleging the former CEO used his position at the company to exploit and abuse men. Abercrombie &amp; Fitch said at the time it was \u201cappalled\u201d by the allegations and launched an independent investigation into the matter.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2kqahdd00113b6mt3pvolwq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            As CEO for over two decades, Jeffries transformed Abercrombie &amp; Fitch into a global brand for teen and youth fashion, often with provocative marketing.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2kqawfl00133b6ml553bv1z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In 2006, Jeffries went viral for a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.salon.com\/2006\/01\/24\/jeffries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Salon<\/a>\u00a0interview, when he said: \u201cWe go after the attractive all-American kid with a great attitude and a lot of friends. A lot of people don\u2019t belong (in our clothes), and they can\u2019t belong. Are we exclusionary? Absolutely.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2kqbros001d3b6miscy4cba@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In 2013, Abercrombie &amp; Fitch garnered notoriety after a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/change.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Change.org<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.change.org\/p\/abercrombie-fitch-ceo-mike-jeffries-stop-telling-teens-they-aren-t-beautiful-make-clothes-for-teens-of-all-sizes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">petition\u00a0<\/a>that gained nearly 80,00 signatures called for the company to introduce larger, more inclusive t-shirt sizes.
