Axiom and Prada have unveiled this new spacesuit, and it looks great.<\/p>\n<p>Called the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU), the suit is like a personalized spacecraft. There\u2019s no tethering to life support like the SpaceX extravehicular activity suit: this suit comes with inbuilt nutrition, CO<sub>2<\/sub> scrubbing, communication, and biometric monitoring, as well as textiles and boots that can withstand lunar temperatures and terrains. The mission will send the first woman and the first person of color to the Moon \u2013 we can almost see them hopping about with this suit.<\/p>\n<p>The plan is currently to have astronauts on the surface of the Moon in 2026, but this is looking increasingly unlikely given that the progress for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iflscience.com\/tags\/starship\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SpaceX\u2019s Starship<\/a> has not been as fast as expected. Originally, Artemis III was going to happen this year. Then, in 2021, NASA\u2019s suits were said to not be ready for flight until April 2025 at the earliest. In 2022, NASA selected Axiom Space and Collins Aerospace to develop and provide astronauts with next-generation spacesuit and spacewalk systems, to be used both in orbit and on the Moon.<\/p>\n<p>Axios showed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iflscience.com\/nasa-reveals-prototype-spacesuit-the-first-woman-on-the-moon-will-wear-67994#:~:text=The%20AxEMU%20is%20specially%20designed,to%20wait%20until%20November%202025.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a prototype<\/a> last year before getting the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iflscience.com\/the-moonwalker-wears-prada-fashion-house-to-design-next-lunar-spacesuit-71022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Italian fashion house Prada<\/a> involved. Prada has plenty of experience with technical engineering problems \u2013 they built a sailboat racing syndicate in the late 1990s that continues to sail today. Italy&#8217;s Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli beat Britain&#8217;s Athena Pathway to win the inaugural Puig Women\u2019s America\u2019s Cup just a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.americascup.com\/news\/3713_LUNA-ROSSA-PRADA-PIRELLI-WIN-INAUGURAL-PUIG-WOMENS-AMERICAS-CUP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">few weeks ago<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGoing beyond our limits is one of the company\u2019s values that perfectly reflects the spirit of the Prada brand and my parents\u2019 vision. A pressurized simulation \u2013 the first since the Apollo era \u2013 has been completed successfully and it is expected to enter a critical review phase next year, before hopefully getting the full seal of approval.<\/p>\n<p>The spacesuit was presented at the International Astronautical Congress, organized by the International Astronautical Federation (IAF) and hosted by Milan in its 75<sup>th<\/sup> edition.
