It was one of the heaviest bombardments to hit the area, a Hezbollah stronghold known as the Dahiya, since an Israeli assault killed Hezbollah\u2019s longtime leader, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/09\/28\/world\/middleeast\/hassan-nasrallah-hezbollah-dead.html\" title=\"\">Hassan Nasrallah<\/a>, on Sept. 27.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">Mr. Safieddine, a cousin of Mr. Nasrallah and one of Hezbollah\u2019s top officials, was presumed to be at that meeting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">On Tuesday, the Israeli military said Mr. Safieddine was killed in a strike about three weeks ago. Mr. Safieddine had a significant influence over Hezbollah and served as the group\u2019s leader when his cousin, Mr. Nasrallah, was not in Lebanon, according to a statement from the Israeli military.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">\u201cThroughout the years, Safieddine directed terrorist attacks against the state of Israel and took part in Hezbollah\u2019s central decision-making processes,\u201d the statement said, adding that more than 25 Hezbollah operatives were present at the meeting where the military struck and killed Mr. Safieddine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">The Israeli military did not provide any proof for its assertion that Mr. Safieddine was dead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">Hezbollah has generally avoided commenting on his fate in the weeks since the strike. There was no immediate comment from Hezbollah.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe have reached Nasrallah, his replacement and most of Hezbollah\u2019s senior leadership,\u201d Lt. Gen. He joined after the Shiite group was formed, with Iranian guidance, in the 1980s during Lebanon\u2019s civil war. He <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/10\/03\/world\/middleeast\/hashem-safieddine-hezbollah-leader.html\" title=\"\">rose quickly in the group<\/a> alongside Mr. Nasrallah, playing many roles and serving as a political, spiritual and cultural leader. He also led Hezbollah\u2019s military activities at one point.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">Like Mr. Nasrallah, Mr. Safieddine usually appeared in a black turban, marking him as a revered Shiite cleric who could trace his ancestry back to the Prophet Muhammad. And like his cousin, Mr. Safieddine studied in Iran: He pursued religious studies in the city of Qom before returning to Lebanon to work for Hezbollah.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">He was close friends with Maj. Gen. Qassim Suleimani, who commanded the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps\u2019 Quds Force in Iran until the United States <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/01\/02\/world\/middleeast\/qassem-soleimani-iraq-iran-attack.html\" title=\"\">killed him in an airstrike<\/a> in Baghdad in 2020. Later that year, Mr. Safieddine\u2019s son married the Iranian general\u2019s daughter in a much-publicized wedding that some <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/kayhanlife.com\/special-reports\/analysis-a-marriage-of-convenience-bolsters-irans-mideast-presence\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">analysts and critics<\/a> point to as emblematic of Iran\u2019s entrenchment in Hezbollah.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">The United States and Saudi Arabia <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/2017-2021.state.gov\/state-department-terrorist-designations-of-hashem-safieddine-and-muhammad-al-isawi\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">designated Mr. Safieddine a terrorist<\/a> in May 2017 for his Hezbollah leadership role.
