The company was forced to<a data-i13n=\"cpos:8;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/chipotle-temporarily-closes-43-locations-customers-sickened-e-211554787.html?fr=sycsrp_catchall\" data-ylk=\"slk:temporarily close 43 locations;cpos:8;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\"> temporarily close 43 locations<\/a> in Washington and Oregon as a result.<!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START -->The CDC declared<a data-i13n=\"cpos:9;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ecoli\/2015\/o26-11-15\/index.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:the outbreak over;cpos:9;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"> the outbreak over<\/a> in February 2016, with the company undergoing an aggressive revamp of its food preparation methods.<!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START -->But it took years for the Mexican food chain to rebuild brand trust and recover its stock price as a result of the crisis. Shares are up more than 500% since 2016.<!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START -->In his note, Saleh, who maintained his Neutral rating on McDonald&#8217;s, said &#8220;it&#8217;s premature to start making comparisons to the Chipotle precedent scarred in investors&#8217; memories.&#8221;<!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START -->&#8220;That incident was driven by repeated outbreaks across the country and continuous news coverage, and other quick-service chains have had localized E. coli outbreaks in recent years with almost no discernible sales impact,&#8221; he explained. &#8220;We are in a wait and assess mode for the time being.&#8221;<!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START -->Jefferies analyst Andy Barish agreed, adding in a separate note that it&#8217;s &#8220;difficult to assess risk in the near term, but Chipotle not the obvious read-through, in our view.&#8221;<!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START -->&#8220;The issue\/source at MCD has been quickly identified and importantly isolated whereas there was little to no visibility at CMG in the early days of outbreak, followed by multiple store closures which is not the case with MCD at this point,&#8221; Barish said, maintaining his Buy rating on shares.<!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START -->&#8220;Nonetheless, it remains too early to tell on the initial consumer response, but we think it may be much less severe than the case of CMG.&#8221;<!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START --><a data-i13n=\"cpos:10;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/author\/alexandra-canal\/\" data-ylk=\"slk:Alexandra Canal;cpos:10;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><em>Alexandra Canal<\/em><\/a><em> is a Senior Reporter at Yahoo Finance.
