A proposed deal \u2013 including a 35% wage increase \u2013 has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2024\/oct\/19\/boeing-strike-vote-pay-raise\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">put to a vote<\/a>, sparking hope that an end is in sight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">The vote comes amid a tough year for Boeing. January\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2024\/jan\/06\/alaska-airlines-grounds-boeing-737-max-9-planes-after-mid-air-window-blowout\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">cabin panel blowout<\/a> during a flight of a brand new Max jet sparked a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/article\/2024\/jun\/18\/boeing-ceo-dave-calhoun-senate-hearing\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">fresh crisis<\/a> surrounding the safety and quality of its planes, as the group scrambled to tackle the concerns of regulators, airlines and passengers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">The company\u2019s defense business has also been under pressure, and a mission involving its Starliner spacecraft \u2013 which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/article\/2024\/sep\/06\/boeing-starliner-iss\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">landed back on Earth in September<\/a> without the two astronauts it carried to the International Space Station \u2013 raised questions about Boeing\u2019s troubled space business.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">\u201cThis is a big ship that will take some time to turn, but when it does, it has the capacity to be great again,\u201d Ortberg told Boeing\u2019s employees and shareholders on Wednesday.
