Now scientists at UC Berkeley say they can do the same job with less than half a pound of a fluffy yellow powder.<\/p>\n<p>The powder was designed to trap the greenhouse gas in its microscopic pores, then release it when it\u2019s ready to be squirreled away someplace where it can\u2019t contribute to global warming. In tests, the material was still in fine form after 100 such cycles, according to <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-024-08080-x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a study<\/a> published Wednesday in the journal Nature.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt performs beautifully,\u201d said <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/chemistry.berkeley.edu\/people\/omar-yaghi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Omar Yaghi<\/a>, a <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/10.1021\/acscentsci.9b00750\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reticular chemist<\/a> at UC Berkeley and the study\u2019s senior author. \u201cBased on the stability and the behavior of the material right now, we think it will go to thousands of cycles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dubbed COF-999, the powder could be deployed in the kinds of large-scale <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/environment\/story\/2024-04-22\/new-scientific-interventions-are-here-to-fight-climate-change-but-they-arent-silver-bullets\">direct air-capture plants<\/a> that are <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/environment\/story\/2024-06-23\/carbon-capture-projects-launch-in-los-angeles-county\">starting to come online<\/a> to reduce the amount of carbon in the atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p>Keeping the concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide below 450 parts per million is necessary to limit global warming to 2 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels and prevent some of the most dire consequences of climate change, scientists say. Measurements taken at the Mauna Loa Observatory in Hawaii indicate that CO2 levels are currently around <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/keelingcurve.ucsd.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">423 ppm<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have to take CO2 from the air \u2014 there\u2019s no way around it,\u201d said Yaghi, who is also chief scientist at Berkeley\u2019s <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/bidmap.berkeley.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bakar Institute of Digital Materials for the Planet<\/a>. \u201cEven if we stop emitting CO2, we still need to take it out of the air. We don\u2019t have any other options.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/sustainability-innovation.asu.edu\/person\/klaus-lackner\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Klaus Lackner<\/a>, founding director of the <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/globalfutures.asu.edu\/cnce\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Center for Negative Carbon Emissions<\/a> at Arizona State University, agreed that direct air capture will become an important tool for sequestering carbon and cooling the planet once important hurdles have been overcome. The advances in the new study may help, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are opening a door into a new family of approaches,\u201d said Lackner, who wasn\u2019t involved in the research. <\/p>\n<p>When viewed under a scanning electron microscope, the powder resembles tiny basketballs with billions of holes, said study leader Zihui Zhou, a materials chemist who is working on his PhD at UC Berkeley.<\/p>\n<p>The structures are held together by some of the strongest chemical bonds in nature, including the ones that turn carbon atoms into diamonds. Attached to the scaffolds are compounds called amines.<\/p>\n<p>When air flows through the structures, most of <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/scied.ucar.edu\/learning-zone\/air-quality\/whats-in-the-air\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">its components<\/a> pass by undisturbed. Then they can vacuum them up for safekeeping, most likely by <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/netl.doe.gov\/carbon-management\/carbon-storage\/faqs\/carbon-storage-faqs#:~:text=At%20depths%20below%20about%20800,the%20temperatures%20and%20pressures%20present\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pumping them deep underground<\/a>, Zhou said.<\/p>\n<p>Once the carbon dioxide is removed from the powder, the entire process can begin again.<\/p>\n<p>To test the carbon-clearing capabilities of COF-999, the researchers packed the powder into a stainless steel tube about the size of a straw and exposed it to outdoor Berkeley air for 20 days straight. <\/p>\n<p>As it entered the tube, the Berkeley air contained CO2 in concentrations ranging from 410 ppm to 517 ppm. When it came out the other side, the scientists could not detect any carbon dioxide at all, Zhou said.<\/p>\n<p>The powder has several advantages over other materials, according to its creators.<\/p>\n<p>Its porous design increases its surface area, which means more places to hold onto CO2 molecules. As a result, it captures carbon dioxide at a rate that is \u201cat least 10 times faster\u201d than other materials used for direct air capture, Zhou said. <\/p>\n<p>Team members have continued to make improvements, and they\u2019re on track to double its capacity in the next year, Yaghi added.<\/p>\n<p>Another plus is that COF-999 will loosen its hold on the CO2 when it\u2019s heated to about 140 degrees F. Comparable materials must be heated to 250 degrees F to extract carbon, Zhou said. <\/p>\n<p>The powder is more durable as well. Zhou said the team has tested a newer version that worked for 300 cycles before the experiment came to an end. <\/p>\n<p>Lackner said that was a promising sign.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGetting 100 cycles out and not seeing any deterioration suggests you can get thousands of cycles,\u201d he said. \u201cWhether you can get hundreds of thousands of cycles, we don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To deploy it on an industrial scale will require designing some kind of large metal box that air can pass through without blowing all the powder away, Zhou said. Those boxes would need to be clustered together in quantities that evoke a modern-day chemical or petroleum plant.<\/p>\n<div class=\"enhancement\" data-click=\"enhancement\" years. He couldn\u2019t estimate what it would cost to produce in bulk, but he said it doesn\u2019t require any expensive or exotic materials.<\/p>\n<p>Yaghi founded a company, Irvine-based <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/atoco.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Atoco<\/a>, to commercialize his research on carbon capture and other technologies. Atoco helped fund the new study.
