The company has stopped using the onions as well as quarter-pound beef patties in several states \u2013 Colorado, Kansas, Utah and Wyoming, as well as portions of Idaho, Iowa, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico and Oklahoma \u2013 while the investigation continues, the CDC said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2m11qfu00063b6msarr7mq6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            According to the agency, the beef patties are used only for the Quarter Pounders, and the slivered onions are used primarily for the Quarter Pounder and not other items. Diced onions and other types of beef patties used at McDonald\u2019s have not been implicated in this outbreak, the FDA said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2lzz7iv000c3b6md0krltak@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Escherichia coli, or E. coli, is a common bacteria, but certain types can make you sick. Infections can occur after someone swallows the bacteria, often when consuming contaminated food or water. It can also spread from person to person through poor bathroom hygiene.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2lzz7iv000d3b6m4qtv5elk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            People with E. coli infections may have symptoms including severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Symptoms usually begin three or four days after swallowing the bacteria.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2lzz7iv000e3b6myjjoyoq5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Although most people who become ill recover without treatment within a week, others can develop serious kidney problems and require hospitalization. Seniors, children younger than 5 and people with weakened immune systems are most at risk of infection, according to the CDC.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2lzz7iv000f3b6mwmco3k45@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            E. coli infections from the new outbreak have led to at least 10 hospitalizations, the CDC says, including a child who had hemolytic uremic syndrome, a serious complication that can develop from an E. coli infection. One older person has died.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2lzz7iv000g3b6mn9znbp5n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Most of the illnesses related to the outbreak are in Colorado and Nebraska, according to the CDC, but the agency notes that the outbreak may go beyond those states. Illnesses have also been reported in Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, Oregon, Utah, Wisconsin and Wyoming.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2lzz7iv000h3b6mj5f4sgdv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The CDC recommends that people call their doctor if they have recently eaten a McDonald\u2019s Quarter Pounder and are experiencing severe E. coli symptoms such as a fever higher than 102 and diarrhea, particularly bloody diarrhea or diarrhea that has not improved in three days, vomiting that limits liquid intake or signs of dehydration.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2lzz7iv000q3b6mzuxvju70@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It can take weeks to determine whether an illness is part of an outbreak, but the CDC said the investigation into the McDonald\u2019s outbreak is \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ecoli\/outbreaks\/e-coli-O157.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fast-moving<\/a>.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2lzz7iv000r3b6mvf0vb8im@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The agency said the outbreak is expected grow, with new cases being reported \u201con a rolling basis\u201d as scientists make genetic linkages between the outbreak strain and the bacteria that is causing human infections.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2lzz7iv000s3b6m4b7o5t1z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The onset of illnesses associated with the outbreak have been reported from September 27 to October 11, according to CDC data. But the start date of the outbreak is likely to shift too as cases come to light, according to an official with knowledge of the investigation.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2lzz7iv000t3b6myl0pwi5w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Outbreaks like these can also wind down quickly after the tainted food or ingredient is removed from the market. That requires a thorough investigation to make sure all possible channels of distribution have been uncovered and stopped.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2lzz7iv000v3b6mc12mdrn7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The president of McDonald\u2019s USA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/10\/23\/investing\/mcdonalds-e-coli-outbreak-stock\/index.html\">said that it\u2019s safe<\/a> to eat at McDonald\u2019s and that affected ingredients are probably out of the supply chain at restaurants.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2lzz7iv000w3b6masp3dyje@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe are very confident that you can go to McDonald\u2019s and enjoy our classics\u201d without getting sick, McDonald\u2019s USA President Joe Erlinger said on NBC\u2019s \u201cToday Show\u201d on Wednesday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2m1fhk0000m3b6m5thnoog4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Quarter Pounder sandwiches will temporarily be removed from the menu in some states while the company makes supply changes, according to the CDC.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2lzz7iv000y3b6mwpce4weq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Erlinger said he believes that \u201cif there has been contaminated product within our supply chain, it\u2019s very likely worked itself through that supply chain already,\u201d but he acknowledged that the number of illnesses reported may rise as the CDC investigates and traces cases.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2lzz7iv000z3b6mlygsn1f5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cServing customers safely in every single restaurant, each and every day, is our top priority,\u201d McDonald\u2019s said in a statement Tuesday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2lzz7iv00103b6mux9sw51y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A <a href=\"https:\/\/corporate.mcdonalds.com\/content\/dam\/sites\/corp\/nfl\/pdf\/McDonald%27s%20Food%20Safety%20Fact%20Sheet.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fact sheet<\/a> from the company highlights food safety protocols that it says are in place, including daily temperature checks and hourly handwashing for employees. It also notes that Quarter Pounders are cooked to order to temperatures that exceed the FDA\u2019s code on best practices.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2m1t0w500003b6mnh347hum@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            CDC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/73\/wr\/mm7326a1.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">data<\/a> released this summer shows that foodborne illness is on the rise in the US. A few illnesses, including E. coli infections, are well above federal targets for reducing foodborne illness.\n    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/factbox\/instances\/cm2m05kvd001q3b6m3omqkr7t@published\" data-component-name=\"factbox\" data-article-gutter=\"true\" class=\"factbox_inline-small factbox_inline-small__\">\n<h3 class=\"factbox_inline-small__title\" data-editable=\"title\">\n    Get CNN Health&#8217;s weekly newsletter<br \/>\n  <\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2m248yj00043b6mon8yd2qp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            There were more than 5 E. coli illnesses for every 100,000 people in the US in 2023, a 25% increase from five years earlier and about 40% higher than target rates.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2m24g1i00073b6mj351xqd1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/campylobacter\/about\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Campylobacter bacteria<\/a> is the most common pathogen causing foodborne illness, causing more than 19 illnesses for every 100,000 people \u2013 a rate that\u2019s 22% higher than five years ago and twice as high as federal goals.
