Voter struggles with inflation and an overall dour view of the state of the US economy have long served as a clear vulnerability for the Democratic candidate in the race, with incumbent President Joe Biden struggling for months to highlight his administration\u2019s economic policy before he stepped aside and Harris coalesced party support to become the\u00a0party\u00a0nominee.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2l84c74000t3b6m6kssbf82@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The letter was spearheaded by Joseph Stiglitz, a Columbia University professor and 2001 winner of the prize, and marks the second major foray into the campaign by a group of Nobel laureates.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2l84c74000u3b6msa9bj91d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Stiglitz also led an effort in June,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/06\/26\/business\/nobel-economists-trump-inflation\/index.html\">with 15 fellow Nobel winners<\/a>, to highlight what the signatories said would be a \u201cdestabilizing effect\u201d of a second Trump term on the US economy. The group said at the time that then-candidate Biden\u2019s economic agenda was\u00a0also\u00a0\u201cvastly superior.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2l84c75000v3b6mqbouwqkh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Trump dismissed the group\u2019s letter at the time, and his campaign slammed those who signed on as \u201cworthless out of touch\u201d economists.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2l8dvk4001l3b6m0pd3amc0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But the new letter, which began to come together after Harris detailed her economic vision late last month, includes seven new signatories and represents a wide cross-section in the field in terms of areas of expertise and approach to economics.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2l84c75000w3b6m1gkhe5ld@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The expanded group includes two of the three most recent laureates \u2013 Simon Johnson and Daron Acemoglu of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.\u00a0They\u00a0received the prize,\u00a0along with James Robinson of the University of Chicago, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/10\/14\/business\/nobel-prize-economics-acemoglu-johnson-robinson\/index.html#:~:text=Three%20economists%20were%20awarded%20the,Swedish%20kronor%20(%241%20million)\">last week for their research<\/a> into how institutions shape which countries become wealthy and prosperous.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2l84c75000x3b6maiyaogav@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The letter is intentionally brief at just 228 words, which reflects both an effort to secure consensus across a broader spectrum of economists and a desire to elevate that consensus with precision, according to a person familiar with the process. The letter was drafted to incorporate feedback from the initial effort.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2l87dtz001j3b6m5jrxbc64@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It also marked an effort in the final days of the campaign to elevate what those involved viewed as an acute risk posed by Trump both in his economic proposals, but also,\u00a0in their view,\u00a0of the potential instability he would pose in an area where certainty and stability are paramount.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2l84c75000y3b6m6bxecahn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The letter points to Trump\u2019s tariff and tax policies as inflationary and likely to balloon the federal deficit \u2013 a widely held view among economists. But it also issues a stark warning.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2l84c75000z3b6mforrn0hy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cAmong the most important determinants of economic success are the rule of law and economic and political certainty, and Trump threatens all of these,\u201d the economists write.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2l84c7500103b6m9r50p9a3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Despite the warnings and forecasts from economists across the political spectrum, Trump has been steadfast in his pledge to wield threats of sweeping tariffs as a cornerstone of his economic agenda.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2l84c7500113b6m9qst15zi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Trump, in a\u00a0recent\u00a0Bloomberg interview at the Economic Club of Chicago, said his tariff plans would \u201chave a massive effect, a positive effect.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2l8e12a001n3b6mu1y8nxar@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe most beautiful word in the dictionary is tariff,\u201d Trump said. \u201cIt\u2019s my favorite word.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2l84c7500123b6mny2r86m4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Trump has promised broad tax cuts beyond his 2017 tax law and promised to abolish taxes on tips, overtime and social security benefits, which\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/10\/17\/politics\/janet-yellen-donald-trump-tariffs\/index.html\">analysts say would cost trillions<\/a>, all as he pointed to tariffs and economic growth as the way to pay for the loss in revenue.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2l82rlj000j3b6m4okzwff2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Economists view tariffs as effectively a tax on consumers who buy imported goods.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2l84c7500133b6m2iaunzg4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He has pledged large-scale de-regulation and, as part of the effort, unleash a surge in oil and gas drilling.
