Hurricane Beryl\u2019s record-setting, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/learn\/what-is-hurricane-rapid-intensification\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rapidly intensifying<\/a> journey into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/learn\/tropical-cyclone-five-explainer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Category 5 status<\/a> at the start of July added fuel to the fire.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Then the tropics went quiet for several weeks in the heart of summer. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/weather-news\/tracking-saharan-air-layer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Persistent Saharan dust in the tropical Atlantic<\/a> and other unusual atmospheric conditions conspired to put the lid on hurricane development. The season drifted back toward an average count.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">But as the end of September neared and the calendar turned to October, the tropics roared back to life, taking advantage of better atmospheric conditions and still-roasting water temperatures. Powerful hurricanes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/helene\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Helene<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/milton\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Milton<\/a> left trails of devastation behind.<\/p>\n<h2 data-v-4e81e892=\"\">Has the late surge made up for lost time?<\/h2>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">By the sheer count of storms, the season has pushed back above average.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">&#8220;So far this season, Mother Nature has produced 15 storms that were strong enough to get a name,&#8221; Norcross said. &#8220;In actual fact, they were pretty good. While they drastically overestimated the number of named storms, they had the number of hurricanes in the ballpark. And it&#8217;s hurricanes that count.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Especially this year, as between Milton and Helene, it may go down as among the top three or four most costly hurricane seasons.<\/p>\n<h2 data-v-4e81e892=\"\">ACE is not in the hole<\/h2>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">But there is another measurement that speaks to the intensity of the season aside from just a raw count. Tropical meteorologists at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/colorado\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Colorado<\/a> State University (CSU) use a formula called Accumulated Cyclone Energy \u2014 or ACE.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">It\u2019s a complex formula that takes into account each tropical cyclone\u2019s maximum sustained <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/wind\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wind<\/a> speed and duration.
