In dangerous times, honest people need to stand up. This is how I\u2019m standing up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ms. Garza said the editorial board had planned to endorse Ms. Harris, but Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong, the billionaire owner of The Los Angeles Times, decided this month that the newspaper would not make any endorsement for president. The paper did not explain to readers why it was not issuing an endorsement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Dr. Soon-Shiong, who bought The Los Angeles Times in 2018 for $500 million, said in a social media post on Wednesday that the editorial board had not followed through on a directive to provide information including \u201ca factual analysis of all the positive and negative policies by each candidate during their tenures at the White House, and how these policies affected the nation.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWith this clear and non-partisan information side-by-side, our readers could decide who would be worthy of being President for the next four years,\u201d he said. \u201cInstead of adopting this path as suggested, the Editorial Board chose to remain silent and I accepted their decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ms. Garza responded to Dr. Soon-Shiong in a text to The New York Times, saying: \u201cWhat he outlines in that tweet is not an endorsement, or even an editorial.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Los Angeles Times has endorsed a Democrat for president in every election cycle since 2008. This year it has made <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/opinion\/story\/2024-09-10\/los-angeles-times-elections-endorsements-2024-november\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">a series of endorsements<\/a> in state, city and county races.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Semafor first <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.semafor.com\/article\/10\/22\/2024\/los-angeles-times-wont-endorse-for-president\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a> that The Los Angeles Times was skipping this year\u2019s presidential endorsement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/about\/pressreleases\/story\/2024-04-10\/mariel-garza-to-lead-times-editorial-board-and-susan-brenneman-named-op-ed-editor\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Ms. Garza<\/a>, who joined the paper\u2019s editorial board in 2015, was appointed editorials editor in April.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In her resignation letter, which The Columbia Journalism Review published in full, Ms. Garza said it mattered that the largest newspaper in California declined to endorse \u201cin a race this important.
