Instead those workers dealt another blow to Boeing, which reported a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/10\/23\/nx-s1-5162174\/boeing-quarterly-loss-striking-machinists-contract\">massive quarterly loss<\/a> on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are consequences when a company mistreats its workers year after year,\u201d said Jon Holden, the president of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers District 751, in a statement announcing the vote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoeing workers are saying they are fully and strongly committed to balancing that out by winning back more of what was taken from them by the company for more than a decade,\u201d Holden said.<\/p>\n<aside id=\"ad-backstage-wrap\" class=\"ad-wrap backstage\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>The vote came on the same day that Boeing posted a staggering $6 billion loss for the third quarter of the year, one of the worst quarters in the company\u2019s history. Those disappointing results were partly the result of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/09\/13\/nx-s1-5110310\/boeing-machinists-union-strike\">the work stoppage<\/a>, which has halted production at Boeing\u2019s factories in the Pacific Northwest.<\/p>\n<p>But Boeing\u2019s problems run deeper than that. Even before the strike, the company was dealing with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/05\/30\/nx-s1-4985791\/boeing-plan-rebuild-trust-and-quality\">quality control and production problems<\/a> across its commercial aviation operations. That changed on Wednesday, as Ortberg laid out his thinking in a conference call and television interview. He talked about rebuilding Boeing\u2019s culture, putting managers closer to the engineering labs and factory floor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first thing we&#8217;ve got to do is stabilize the business. And obviously, getting through the IAM strike is the first big step in doing that,\u201d Ortberg told CNBC. \u201cIt&#8217;s more important in terms of our long term. The company also pledged to increase its contributions to employee 401k retirement funds.<\/p>\n<p>There was one key union demand where Boeing refused to budge: the pension plan. Union members made very clear that they want to reinstate the defined benefit pension plan they lost a decade ago.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2008\/09\/08\/94377264\/boeing-machinists-strike-over-pay-health-benefits\">last time<\/a> Boeing machinists went on strike in 2008, the work stoppage lasted for close to eight weeks, costing the company an estimated $2 billion.
