{"id":117794,"date":"2024-10-24T10:58:49","date_gmt":"2024-10-24T03:58:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=117794"},"modified":"2024-10-24T10:58:49","modified_gmt":"2024-10-24T03:58:49","slug":"bad-sleep-in-your-40s-may-accelerate-brain-aging-new-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=117794","title":{"rendered":"Bad sleep in your 40s may accelerate brain aging: new study"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>What a nightmare!<\/p>\n<p>Sleeping poorly in your 40s may age your brain faster \u2014 and you might feel the effects into your late 50s, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/news-releases\/1061921\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a new study finds<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur findings highlight the importance of <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/05\/19\/lifestyle\/doctor-praises-cognitive-shuffling-hack-to-quickly-fall-asleep\/\">addressing sleep problems<\/a> earlier in life to preserve brain health, including maintaining a consistent sleep schedule, exercising, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/06\/13\/lifestyle\/sleep-expert-says-drinking-coffee-after-noon-causes-insomnia\/\">avoiding caffeine<\/a> and alcohol before going to bed and using relaxation techniques,\u201d said study author Dr. Kristine Yaffe of UC San Francisco.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Sleeping poorly in your 40s may age your brain faster \u2014 and you might feel the effects into your late 50s, a new study finds. <span class=\"credit\">Antonioguillem \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Nearly 600 adults around 40 years old completed a sleep questionnaire at the start of the study and five years later.<\/p>\n<p>The questions included: \u201cDo you usually have trouble falling asleep?\u201d \u201cDo you usually wake up several times at night?\u201d and \u201cDo you usually wake up far too early?\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>The researchers noted if participants experienced short sleep duration, poor sleep quality, troubles falling asleep, difficulty staying asleep, early morning awakening or daytime sleepiness. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/wellness-and-prevention\/oversleeping-bad-for-your-health#:~:text=Sleep%20needs%20can%20vary%20from,or%20medical%20problem%2C%20Gamaldo%20says.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Experts generally recommend<\/a> seven to nine hours of shuteye a night.<\/p>\n<p>Participants were divided into three groups based on their sleep traits. Those in the low group (about 70%) had none or one of the six characteristics. Middle group participants (22%) had two or three, and those in the high group (8%) had four to six.<\/p>\n<p>Fifteen years after the start of the study, participants underwent cranial scans that helped researchers calculate their brain age.<\/p>\n<p>After accounting for age, sex, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/08\/14\/lifestyle\/untreated-high-blood-pressure-linked-to-higher-alzheimers-risk\/\">high blood pressure<\/a>, diabetes and other factors, researchers determined that middle group brains were 1.6 years older on average than low group brains. Those in the high group had an average brain age 2.6 years older.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Study participants answered questions about their sleep habits and underwent cranial scans that helped researchers calculate their brain age. <span class=\"credit\">Elena Abduramanova \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Of the six sleep habits, poor sleep quality, difficulty falling and staying asleep and early morning awakening were linked to greater brain age, especially when people experienced these problems for at least five years.<\/p>\n<p>The findings were published Wednesday in the online issue of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.neurology.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Neurology<\/a>, the medical journal of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aan.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">American Academy of Neurology<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Participants who slept terribly had an average brain age that was 2.6 years older than their peers. <span class=\"credit\">kleberpicui \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>The researchers emphasized that their study, which was funded by the National Institute on Aging, does not prove that poor sleep accelerates brain aging \u2014 it only shows an association between the two.<\/p>\n<p>One limitation of the research is that participants reported their own sleep problems and they may not have accurately characterized them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFuture research should focus on finding new ways to improve sleep quality and investigating the long-term impact of sleep on brain health in younger people,\u201d Yaffe said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/news-releases\/1061917\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Also Wednesday in Neurology<\/a>, Yale researchers reported that middle-aged people with uncontrolled blood pressure, blood sugar or cholesterol who don\u2019t exercise, eat healthfully or sleep well face a <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/10\/21\/lifestyle\/how-to-prevent-a-stroke-stroke-association-issues-new-advice\/\">higher risk of stroke<\/a>, dementia or depression later in life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur study found that making these healthy lifestyle choices in middle age can have meaningful impacts on brain health later in life,\u201d study author Dr. Santiago Clocchiatti-Tuozzo said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"single__inline-module inline-module inline-module--newsletter aligncenter aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-newsletter\">\n<div class=\"inline-module__inner\">\n<div class=\"inline-module__title-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"inline-module__unsubmitted-title-wrapper\">\n<h3 class=\"inline-module__title headline headline--combo-sm-md\">\n\t\t\t\t\tGet the latest breakthroughs in medicine, diet &amp;
