He\u2019s also floated a 100% or 200% tariff on cars made in Mexico or on products made by companies that move manufacturing from the US to Mexico.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2mnt7dz000h3b5wftxe22sk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Together, a 20% across-the-board tariff with a 60% tariff on Chinese-made goods would amount to about a $3,900 annual tax increase for a middle-income family, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanprogressaction.org\/article\/former-president-trump-proposes-an-up-to-3900-tax-increase-for-a-typical-family\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Center for American Progress Action Fund,<\/a> a liberal think tank.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2mnt7dz000i3b5ww2gkcrmz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            If the 20% tariff was just 10%, as Trump sometimes suggests, the total impact for middle-class families could be $2,500 a year, according to CAP.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2mnt7dz000j3b5wxhs5d241@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Separate studies estimate that the impact of Trump\u2019s proposed tariffs would also raise prices for families, but by a lower amount. The Peterson Institute for International Economics estimated the new duties would cost the average middle-class household\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.piie.com\/publications\/policy-briefs\/2024\/why-trumps-tariff-proposals-would-harm-working-americans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">about $1,700 annually<\/a>. And the Tax Policy Center said the impact could be\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.taxpolicycenter.org\/taxvox\/tpc-trump-tariffs-would-raise-household-taxes-and-slow-imports\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$1,350 a year<\/a>\u00a0for middle-income households.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2mnt7dz000k3b5wzvkea481@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <em>From CNN\u2019s Katie Lobosco <\/em>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2mnseoz000b3b5wikee80mo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In a back-and-forth with CNN\u2019s Anderson Cooper\u00a0on Wednesday, Vice President Kamala Harris said, \u201cNo, Anderson, I pledged that I would not ban fracking,\u201d when she was campaigning as the vice presidential nominee\u00a0in 2020.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2mpsbri00123b5wb9umfxgr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <strong>Facts First:<\/strong>\u00a0<em>This is false. Harris did not make her personal<strong> <\/strong>position on fracking clear during her only debate in 2020, the general election\u2019s vice presidential debate against then-Vice President Mike Pence. Harris\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.debates.org\/voter-education\/debate-transcripts\/vice-presidential-debate-at-the-university-of-utah-in-salt-lake-city-utah\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>never explicitly stated<\/em><\/a><em>\u00a0a personal position on fracking during that debate. <\/em>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2mpsbri00133b5wf6bruzmk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Rather, she said that Joe Biden, the head of the Democratic ticket at the time, would not ban fracking if he was elected president. Harris said during the 2020 vice presidential debate: \u201cJoe Biden will not end fracking,\u201d and \u201cI will repeat, and the American people know, that Joe Biden will not ban fracking.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2mpsbri00143b5wpj6ky7sg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When Harris did reference her own views on fracking earlier in the cycle during the Democratic presidential primary in 2019, she went so far as to say that \u201cthere\u2019s no question I\u2019m in favor of banning fracking.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2mpsbri00153b5wxhjtqf5u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It made sense that Harris was addressing Biden\u2019s plans at the time given that the president sets administration policy. But contrary to her claim on Wednesday, neither of her 2020 debate comments made clear that she personally held a different view on the subject than she had the year prior.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2mpsbri00163b5w28z0oqtt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <em>From CNN\u2019s Daniel Dale and Ella Nilsen<\/em>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2mq2x8y001c3b5wzfnwt8cj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            At CNN\u2019s town hall with Kamala Harris on Wednesday, the vice president claimed that only 2% of the US-Mexico border wall was built during former President Donald Trump\u2019s administration.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2mq2x8y001d3b5wkop8qpig@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cHow much of that wall did he build? I think the last number I saw was about 2%,\u201d she said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2mq2x8y001e3b5wp8bwbfzs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <strong>Facts First<\/strong>: <em>This claim is exaggerated. According to <\/em><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/24767855-cbp-border-wall-status-paper_as-of-01222021-final-003\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a 2021 report<\/a><\/em><em> from the US Customers and Border Protection and the Army Corps of Engineers, nearly 52 miles of \u201cnew primary wall\u201d\u00a0and 33 miles of \u201cnew secondary wall\u201d were built during the Trump presidency. More than 370 miles of broken-down or outdated primary and secondary wall was also replaced. <\/em>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2mq2x8y001f3b5wnc8yvr43@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            During his campaign and throughout his presidency, Trump pledged to build a wall with parameters evolving from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/01\/30\/politics\/trump-broken-promises\/index.html\">1,000 miles to over 500 miles.<\/a> Using the \u201cnew primary wall\u201d numbers from the 2021 report, one could estimate that 5.2% of his 1,000-mile promise was met or 10.4% of his 500-mile goal was completed.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2mq2x8y001g3b5w5ymd8fj0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Harris\u2019 running mate, Gov. Tim Walz, made a similar claim earlier this month at the CBS vice presidential debate.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2mq2x8y001h3b5wirvfkhlc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The entire US-Mexico border is roughly 2,000 miles. The 52 miles of new primary wall would amount to 2.6% of that total length, but as CNN has previously reported, Trump had pledged to build more wall, not a new wall across the entire southern border.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2mq2x8y001i3b5wyvcwwkzs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <em>From CNN\u2019s Piper Hudspeth Blackburn<\/em>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2mq2wbj001a3b5w5o07pfps@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Vice President Kamala Harris slammed her opponent former President Donald Trump for putting in place policies that benefitted the wealthy during his first term.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2mqejsc001s3b5w6wtvqncp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cDonald Trump, when he was president, gave tax cuts to the richest, to billionaires and big corporations,\u201d she said at CNN\u2019s town hall.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2mqejsc001t3b5w8bzkyodu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <strong>Facts First:<\/strong> <em>This claim needs context. While the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which Harris is referencing, benefited the rich far more than others, it did reduce taxes for most people, according to the nonpartisan <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/taxpolicycenter.org\/publications\/effect-tcja-individual-income-tax-provisions-across-income-groups-and-across-states\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Tax Policy Center<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2mqejsc001u3b5wngb29gqz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The 2017 law made many changes to the tax code, including temporarily lowering many individual income tax rates, notably the top rate from 39.6% to 37% for the highest earners.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2mqejsc001v3b5wx6ayxm4t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Tax Policy Center took a look at whom the law would help the most. It found that taxes would decline, on average, for all income groups.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2mqejsc001w3b5ww336iost@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Middle-income taxpayers earning between about $49,000 and $86,000 were expected to see a tax cut of about $800, on average, or 1.4% of their after-tax income, according to the analysis.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2mqejsc001x3b5wjjqwnx2e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Still, more than 60% of the benefits were expected to go to those whose incomes are in the top 20%. More than 40% of the benefits were expected to go to those in the top 5%.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2mqejsc001y3b5w6n8twqw8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Those making between $500,000 and $1 million were expected to get an average tax cut of about $21,000, lifting their after-tax incomes by 4.3%, according to the center\u2019s estimates. Those who earn $1 million or more would enjoy an average tax cut of about $70,000, raising their after-tax incomes by 3.3%.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2mqejsc001z3b5wf4ykhcad@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Only a little more than a quarter of those in the lowest-income households would see their taxes reduced. Their tax cut would be about $200, on average.
